DESCRIPTION
A blank gray screen occurs after the X server terminates for the first time on HP Z1 in RHEL 5.7 or 5.8. Text mode (run state 3) operates normally.

HP Z1 using Intel HD (integrated) graphics. This issue is not noted when using NVIDIA MXM graphics cards.

Symptoms:
The screen will go blank (not black, but a light gray indicating the backlight is on) when X server ends No session login screen is presented.

SCOPE
Information in this document applies to the listed systems configured as follows:
Systems:
  • HP Z1 Workstation
Operating Systems:
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (x86)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (x86_64)
RESOLUTION
Disabling RHGB (e.g. by removing "rhgb" from the kernel boot line) allows the server to come up and present the user session login one time, which could be sufficient for many users. After the first logout or other cause of an X server reset, the screen goes blank.
Some users may be able to operate by always rebooting the system when they would normally just log out.
The other way of working with the system is to only use a text mode such as run state 3.
