HP Photosmart Premium All-in-One Printer Series (C309) - Setting up the All-in-One (Hardware)

Introduction
This document explains how to set up the physical parts of the product. Complete these steps before you install the product software on your computer.
This document includes the following steps to set up the product:
  • Unpack the All-in-One
  • Adjust the control panel display
  • Connect the power cord and adapter
  • Load plain white paper
  • Load photo paper
  • Turn on power
  • Select a language and region
  • Install the printhead assembly
  • Install the cartridges
  • Align the All-in-One
Follow these steps in order. When you are finished, you can click the appropriate link at the end of this document if you need instructions to install the printer software.
  note:
Do not connect a USB cable now. If you plan to use a USB cable to connect the printer to the computer, you will be prompted to connect it at the correct time during the software installation.
Step one: Unpack the All-in-One
  1. Remove all tape from the front and back of the product and the protective film from the control panel display.

  2. Open the product and remove all the packaging materials from inside the product.

      caution:
    Be sure to remove the cardboard insert from the carriage. Failure to remove the cardboard insert can result in a carriage stall or jam during setup.
  1. Connect the power cord to the back of the product.

  2. Connect the power cord to the power supply.

  3. Plug the power cord into the electrical outlet.

  1. Lift and hold the output tray in the open position.
  2. Slide the paper width guide outwards.

  3. Load the paper stack into the input tray with the short edge forward and print side down.

  4. Slide paper width guide inward until it rests against the stack of paper.

  5. Lower the output tray, and then pull out the tray extender. Flip up the paper catch.

  1. Raise photo tray lid, and then slide paper width guide outwards.

  2. Load the photo paper into the photo tray with the short edge forward and print side down. Slide the stack of photo paper forward until it stops.
      note:
    The print side is the glossy side. If the photo paper has perforated tabs, load the photo paper so that the tabs are facing away from the product.

  3. Slide paper width guide inward until it rests against the stack of photo paper.

      note:
    Do not overload the photo tray. Make sure the stack of photo paper fits within the photo tray and is no higher than the top of the paper width guide.
  4. Lower the photo tray lid.

Press the Power button () to turn the product on.

Step six: Select the language and country/region
After turning the product on, it prompts you to set or confirm the language and country/region. If the default language and country/region settings are correct, you can skip this step. If you want to change the default settings, follow these steps.
  1. On the Home screen of the product control panel, touch the right arrow () to view more options.
  2. Touch Setup (). The Setup Menu displays.
  3. Touch Preferences. The Preferences screen displays.
  4. Touch Set Language. The Set Language screen displays.
  5. Touch the appropriate language from the list, and then touch Yes to confirm the language selection.
      note:
    Touch the down arrow () or the up arrow () to scroll through the list.
  6. Touch Set Country/Region. The Set Country/Region screen displays.
  7. Touch the appropriate country/region from the list, and then touch Yes to confirm the country/region selection.
      note:
    Touch the down arrow () or the up arrow () to scroll through the list.
  1. Open the cartridge access door by lifting from the front right of the product until the cover locks into place.

    The carriage moves to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.
  2. Remove the plastic wrap on the cartridge by pulling the orange tab.

  3. Twist the orange cap counter-clockwise to snap it off the cartridge.

  4. With the cartridge contacts facing the printhead, slide each cartridge into its slot as indicated by the colored shape icons on the cartridge and on the printhead.
  5. Press down on the cartridge until it clicks into place.

  6. Repeat this procedure for each cartridge.

  7. Close the cartridge access door.

  1. Make sure you loaded the paper correctly, and then touch OK on the product control panel to begin alignment.
    The product aligns the printhead and prints an alignment page.
    If the printer alignment does not begin automatically, follow these steps to align the product:
    1. On the Home screen of the product control panel, touch the right arrow () to view more options.
    2. Touch Setup (). The Setup Menu displays.
    3. Touch Tools. The Tools screen displays.
    4. Touch the down arrow (), and then touch Align Printer. The product aligns the printhead and prints an alignment page.

  2. Press OK again. The alignment is complete.
