Replacing Cartridges for HP Photosmart C5540, C5550, C5570, and C5580 All-in-One Printer Series

To prevent print quality issues, replace the cartridges when they are low or out of ink.

Video of replacing cartridges

The following video demonstrates the steps explained on this page. The outside of the product might look different, but the steps are the same for your product.

Step one: Prepare the cartridge

  1. Remove the new cartridge from its packaging. Be careful to touch only the black plastic.
  2. Gently remove the plastic tape by pulling the pink pull tab.

    2. Plastic tape with pull tab (must be removed before installing)
    3. Ink nozzles under tape
Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Do not retape the cartridges. Handling these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

Step two: Replace the old cartridge

Use the following steps to replace the old cartridge. Make sure paper is in the input tray before beginning the procedure.
  1. Press the On button () to turn on the printer.
If the printer is off when the cartridge door is opened, the printer will not release the cartridges.
  2. Lift the cartridge door. The carriage moves to the far right side of the printer. If the carriage does not move to the right side, turn the printer off, and then turn it on again.

  3. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent, and then lightly press down on a cartridge to release it.
    • Remove the cartridge from the slot on the left to replace the tri-color cartridge.
    • Remove the cartridge from the slot on the right to replace the black cartridge.
  4. Pull the cartridge toward you out of its slot.
If you remove a cartridge because it is low or out of ink, recycle it. The HP Inkjet Supplies Recycling Program is available in many regions, and it is free of charge.
  5. Slide the new cartridge at a slight upward angle into the empty slot, and gently push it until it snaps into place.
    • To install a tri-color cartridge, insert it into the left slot.
    • To install a black cartridge, insert it into the right slot.

  6. Close the cartridge door.

Step three: Place the unused cartridge in a cartridge protector, or in an airtight container

If you are temporarily removing a working cartridge (that is, not replacing an empty cartridge) to install a photo cartridge, put the cartridge that you are not using in a cartridge protector to prevent it from drying out.
Some photo cartridges come with cartridge protectors. If you do not have a cartridge protector, store the unused cartridge in a rigid, airtight container (not a plastic bag). Do not rest the cartridge nozzles directly on the surface in the plastic container.

Step four: Align the new cartridge

The printer prints a cartridge alignment sheet when new cartridges are installed. There is no need to complete this procedure if the printer printed the alignment sheet.
If the printer did not automatically print a cartridge alignment sheet, follow these steps to align the cartridges. Make sure paper is in the input tray before beginning the procedure.
  1. Open HP Solution Center.
    • Windows XP: On the Windows taskbar, click Start, click All Programs, point to HP, and then click HP Solution Center.
    • Windows Vista: On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Solution Center.
    • Windows 2000: On the Windows taskbar, click Start, click Programs, point to HP, and then click HP Solution Center.
    HP Solution Center opens.
  2. Make sure your product is selected, and then click Settings.
  3. In the Print Settings area, click Printer Toolbox. The printer Toolbox opens.
  4. Click the Device Services tab, and then click Align the Print Cartridges. The Align the Print Cartridges dialog box opens.
  5. Click Align. The product prints an alignment sheet.
Printing alignment sheets shortens the life of ink cartridges. Print them only when necessary.
