HP Designjet CP Series Printers - Target Markets

What is new about the HP Designjet 2800CP and 3800CP printers?

The HP Designjet 2800CP and 3800CP printers are based on the HP Designjet 2000CP and 3000CP printers, with an external Fiery X2-CP RIP included. The Fiery X2-CP RIP improves performance in two ways:
  • Achieves a 60% increase in mechanical print speed when compared with the HP Designjet 2500CP and 3500CP printers, by using HP developed Varware and wide-mask technology.
  • Provides faster processing times (3x to 4x faster for a typical PostScript file; when compared with the HP Designjet 2500CP and 3500CP printers via custom ASICs and a MIPS R5000 motherboard with a 200 MHz CPU.
The new Varware print modes are called High-Speed print modes, and there is a Photo/Best and Productivity/Normal High-Speed print mode.

Who are the HP Designjet 2800CP and 3800CP printers for?

The HP Designjet 2800CP and 3800CP printers are ideal for Commercial Print Service Providers, primarily Quick Printers and new to large-format PSPs, looking for both productivity and ease of use. They are also the best fit for those PSPs who already have a Fiery-driven device, since the learning curve for this new printer will be greatly reduced. As a secondary market, some professional PSPs such as Digital Color Print Shops and Graphic Arts Service Bureaus will also find these printers as the perfect solution for them, depending on their needs. If they are looking for is speed, ease of use, queue management, and color management (in this order), these new printers are the ideal solution.

What is different compared to the target market of the HP Designjet 2000CP and 3000CP printers?

The HP Designjet 200CP/3000CP printers are targeted to customers having an existing RIP, or looking for specific features that are provided by some RIP vendors. The Fiery X2-CP RIP provided with the HP Designjet 2800CP and 3800CP printers is a PostScript level 3 RIP with added functionality when compared with the internal RIP of the HP Designjet 2500CP and 3500CP printers. However, other RIPs available in the market usually provide further functionality in different aspects.

Do these printers replace the internal RIP-based solutions?

No. The HP Designjet 2500CP and 3500CP printers will remain in the Designjet portfolio, as the entry-level complete solution from HP. Moreover, the HP Designjet 2500CP and 3500CP printers provide some specific functionality that is missing in the new HP Designjet 2800CP and 3800CP printers.

What about Graphic Professionals? Is it a good solution for in-house customers?

It depends on customer needs. The HP Designjet 2500CP and 3500CP printers are the best choice if they are looking for a one-box, Plug and Play, expandable solution. The new HP Designjet 2800CP and 3800CP printers offer enhanced productivity at a higher price, and are also the perfect solution for companies that are standardizing on the Fiery X2-CP RIP, since the user interface is as in any other Fiery X2-CP RIP driving any output device.

How do the HP Designjet 2800CP and 3800CP printers compare to the 1000 series just released?

The HP Designjet 1000 Series printers are targeted to architects, engineers and GIS professionals, and are a good fit for some graphic applications. On the other side, these new HP Designjet printers have the advantages of being part of the CP Series portfolio: printer width up to 54 inches, photo-quality printing, availability of both indoor and UV ink sets, wider media set.
