HP Designjet 2500CP Printer - Hard Disk Drive Overview

Overview

The HP Designjet series large format printer (with the PostScript (R) option installed) is configured with a hard disk. The hard disk is pre-configured and cannot be partitioned by the user. Hard disk storage space is intended for font storage, file management, and PostScript printing. The main benefits of the internal hard disk are listed below.

Virtual RAM

The internal hard disk is used as "virtual" memory to process larger and more complex files. If the files are very large and complex and the random access memory (RAM) is not big enough to render them, then a partition of the hard disk is used as extended memory.

Partitions

Hard disks are partitioned as follows:
  • 800 MB (or more) for font storage
  • 850 MB (or more) for PostScript internal use such as parsing, analyzing, rendering, preparing, and printing
  • 410 MB (or more) for print management such as queuing and nesting
As an example, the 4.3 GB hard drive used for on the HP Designjet 3500CP printer provides 805 MB of storage space for fonts and color maps. Another 1650 MB are reserved for print management of PostScript (R) files (such as queuing and nesting) and 1625 MB are set aside for PostScript work on the hard disk (parsing or analyzing, rendering or preparing, and printing).
note:
Hard disk drive partitions cannot be changed, and are dependent on the size of the original installed drive. Additional hard drives cannot be added to the HP Designjet series printers. There are no upgrade paths to install larger hard drives.

Queuing and nesting of PostScript files

The hard disk is used to store the files that are in the queues. These files could be nested, reprinted, or printed several times, thus saving the time of reprocessing and resending them.

Process ahead

When queuing is on, it allows one file to be printed while another is being processed; thereby, improving throughput.

Additional PostScript resources

Available on the hard disk are halftones, color emulation tables, and color rendering dictionaries.

Font support

All the supported fonts are stored on the hard disk.

Asian character set support

The printer ships with the following built-in character sets:
  • Simplified Chinese (for China)
  • Traditional Chinese (for Taiwan)
  • Japanese (Kanji 1 and 2)
  • Korean
