HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier - Clearing Paper Jams

PAPER PATH JAM LOCATIONS
One of the following messages is displayed on the display panel when a jam occurs in a paper path:
  • 13.x Paper Jam Clear n Pages (where x = the number for a specific jam and n = the number of pages jammed in the HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier)
  • 13.0 Paper Jam Clear Printer
  • Clear Jammed Staple
  • Stapler Align Error
Look for jams in the following locations:
  1. Toner cartridge area
  2. Tray 1 pick-up roller and feed area
  3. Right door
  4. Vertical transfer door
  5. 2000-sheet input tray (Tray 4)
  6. Front door
  7. Tray 2 and Tray 3
  8. Left door
  9. Multi-bin mailbox
  10. Stapler
  note:
Open and close all HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier covers to clear the paper jam message. After removing a sheet of paper, you may need to check other areas to ensure that all paper has been removed.
When a sheet of jammed paper becomes badly shredded, it is a good idea to carefully put together all pieces of the paper, to be sure you have not overlooked a small piece. All portions of a jammed piece of paper must be removed or you may run into repeated jams. If after you clear a paper jam (by following the procedures below) the HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier still jams, there are a few things you can do:
  • If printing in PostScript (R), use the JAM RECOVERY=ON menu item under the PostScript Menu. The HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier will attempt to automatically recover from paper jams.
  • Execute a formfeed from the computer or the HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier control panel (a menu item under the Job Control Menu). A formfeed may flush any paper or envelopes left in the HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier.
  • Check to make sure you have located and removed all scraps of paper from inside the HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier.
  • Use the Error Log Page and Error Codes to aid you in isolating where the errors are occurring. (See the "Error Log Page" section in Chapter 4 and the "Mopier Messages" table in Chapter 7 of the HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier User’s Guide.)
  • Ensure that the area under the registration is not jammed. Remove the toner cartridge and lift the two green tabs located below the toner cartridge area.
Also refer to the "Repeated Paper Jams" section at the end of this document.
Paper jams occur most often when:
  • Paper trays are not correctly loaded (see the "Print Tasks" section in Chapter 5 of the HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier User’s Guide).
  • Your print media does not meet the specifications listed in Chapter 5 of the HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier User’s Guide.
  • The media is in poor condition.
  • The HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier needs to be cleaned.
CLEARING JAMS FROM SPECIFIC PAPER PATH LOCATIONS
CLEARING THE TOP OUTPUT BIN
If the paper jam extends into the output area on the top of the HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier, slowly and carefully pull the paper straight out of the HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier so it does not tear.

  2. Check for paper in the pick-up roller of Tray 1.
  3. Remove any paper from this area by pulling it out, away from the HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier.
  4. Remove any and all pieces of torn paper. Carefully check to be sure you have removed all scraps.

  2. Remove the toner cartridge.
      warning:

  3. Remove any paper by pulling it out toward you, away from the HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier. Be careful not to tear the page.
  4. If you cannot remove all the paper from the front door, push the Mailbox with Stapler away from the print engine, open the left door by lowering it outward, and carefully pull out any jammed paper.
      warning:
Avoid touching the adjacent fusing area; it may be hot.
  5. Remove the Duplex Unit by pressing the colored tab on the lower right side of the unit, and pulling the entire unit out of its slot.
  6. Remove any paper remaining in the Duplex Unit.
  7. Re-install the Duplex Unit by sliding it back into the slot until it clicks into place, and close all open doors.
  8. Push the Mailbox with Stapler back into place.
      note:
After removing a sheet of paper, you may need to check other areas to ensure that all paper has been removed. Whenever a sheet of jammed paper becomes badly shredded, it is a good idea to carefully piece all parts together to be sure you have not overlooked some small part. All portions of a jammed piece of paper must be removed, or you may run into repeated jams.
CLEARING THE LEFT DOOR (FUSER AREA)

  3. Lower the two green tabs and carefully check for additional pieces of paper. Remove all scraps.
  4. Close the door.
CLEARING TRAY 2 (OR TRAY 3)
  1. Open the tray. (Tray 2 is located above Tray 3, on the same side of the HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier as the control panel.)

  3. Be sure to clear any torn pieces of paper.
  4. Close the tray.
CLEARING THE MAILBOX WITH STAPLER
  1. Turn off the HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier and remove the Left Output Bin.
  2. Clear paper from the mailbox output area (just below the stapler handle) by pulling it out, away from the HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier.
  3. Pull the mailbox away from the HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier and check the mailbox input area (between the mailbox and the print engine). Carefully remove all scraps.
  4. Also check the fuser area (accessed by lowering the left door). Clear paper from the jammed area by carefully pulling it out, away from the HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier.
      warning:
Avoid touching the adjacent fusing area; it may be hot.
      note:
After removing a sheet of paper you may need to check other areas to ensure that all paper has been removed. Whenever a sheet of jammed paper becomes badly shredded, it is a good idea to carefully piece all parts together to be sure you have not overlooked some small part. All portions of a jammed piece of paper must be removed or you may run into repeated jams.

REPEATED PAPER JAMS
If jams continue after following the steps below, contact your authorized HP service provider.
  1. Check to see that the media is correctly loaded in the trays, and that all width guides are correctly set (not skewed).
  2. Try turning over the stack of paper in the tray. If you are using letterhead paper, try printing from Tray 1.
  3. Do not use previously printed paper, or torn, worn, or irregular paper. For the recommended paper and other media for your HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier, see Chapter 5 of the HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier User’s Guide.
  4. Check the media specifications (if outside of the recommended specifications, problems may occur).
  5. The HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier may be dirty. Clean as described in Chapter 7 of the HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier User’s Guide.
  6. Check that paper is not longer than 17.7 inches (450 mm), wider than 11.7 inches (297 mm), shorter than 3.9 inches (100 mm), or slimmer than 7.5 inches (191 mm). (These are the maximum and minimum dimensions that the HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier can feed; otherwise the HP LaserJet 5Si Mopier will jam.)
  7. Ensure that the paper tray is set for the size of paper that is being used and that the tray is not overloaded with paper.
