HP LaserJet MFP M232-M237 printers - First time printer setup

This document is for HP LaserJet MFP M232dw, M232dwc, M233sdn, M233sdw, M233dw, M234sdwe, M234sdw, M234sdne, M234sdn, M234dwe, M234dw, M236sdn, M236sdw, M236dw, and M236d printers.

To set up a printer for the first time, remove the printer and all packing materials from the box, connect the printer to a power source, download and install HP Smart or the printer software, connect the printer to a network, create an HP Account, and then load paper.

Step 1: View an overview video

Step 2: Remove the printer from the box

Remove the printer from the box, and then remove the packing material.

Remove the printer and power cord from the box.
Remove and recycle all packing material.

Do not remove the toner cartridge from the printer. The printer is shipped with the toner cartridge already prepared for printing.
Remove the tape, and then gently pull out the orange toner sheet.

Step 3: Install paper tray, tray cover, and load paper

Install paper tray, tray cover, and then load paper in the input tray.

HP LaserJet MFP M232dw, M232dwc, M233dw, M234dwe, M234dw, M236dw, and M236d printers (without document feeder)

Slide the paper guides to the edges of the input tray.
Load a stack of plain paper with the print-side facing up into the input tray, and then slide the stack forward until it stops.

Load up to 150 sheets of paper with the print side facing up and the top edge toward the printer. If you are loading pre-punched paper, load the paper with the holes toward the left side of the tray.
Slide the paper guides until they rest against the stack of paper.
Install the tray cover by grasping it with both hands, and then pushing it inwards until it snaps into place.
Lower the tray cover and extend the output tray.

HP LaserJet MFP M233sdn, M233sdw, M234sdwe, M234sdw, M234sdne, M234sdn, M236sdn, and M236sdw printers (with document feeder)

Install the input tray by grasping it with both hands, and then pushing it inwards until it snaps into place
Slide the paper guides to the edges of the input tray.
Load a stack of plain paper with the print-side facing up into the input tray, and then slide the stack forward until it stops.

Load up to 150 sheets of paper with the print side facing up and the top edge toward the printer. If you are loading pre-punched paper, load the paper with the holes toward the left side of the tray.
Slide the paper guides until they rest against the stack of paper.
Close the top and front tray cover.

Step 4: Connect the power cord and turn on the printer

Plug the power cord into a wall outlet and turn on the printer.

Do not connect a USB cable at this time.

Connect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then plug the other end of the power cord into an electrical outlet.
Turn on the printer.

HP+ printers must be connected to the internet (Wi-Fi or wired). If you want to use a USB cable, connect your HP+ printer to internet first, and then connect the USB cable as secondary connection.

Step 5: Install the printer software, connect the printer to your device, and complete setup

Use the HP Smart app or HP Easy Start to help you set up the printer and connect the printer to a wireless network (preferred) or USB connection.

An HP account is required. If you do not have an account, you can create one during the software installation process.

HP Smart (Windows 10, macOS)

Install HP Smart, open the app, and then add your printer.

Make sure your computer is connected to your Wi-Fi network and the printer is in Wireless Setup Mode. In Wireless Setup Mode, the front light bar pulses purple and the Wi-Fi icon blinks.

If the front light on the printer is not purple and pulsing, set the printer to Wireless Setup Mode.
1. Press and hold the Information button for three seconds and release.
  
  All control panel buttons light up.
2. Press the Wi-Fi and Cancel buttons at the same time.
  
  The front light becomes purple and pulses.
Open the HP Smart app on your computer. If you do not have HP Smart, download it from 123.hp.com.
In HP Smart, click the Plus sign , and then follow the on-screen instructions to add your printer and complete the Wi-Fi connection.

HP Smart (Android, Apple iOS)

Install HP Smart, open the app, and then add your printer.

Make sure your computer is connected to your Wi-Fi network and the printer is in Wireless Setup Mode. In Wireless Setup Mode, the front light bar pulses purple and the Wi-Fi icon blinks.

If the front light on the printer is not purple and pulsing, set the printer to Wireless Setup Mode.
1. Press and hold the Information button for three seconds and release.
  
  All control panel buttons light up.
2. Press the Wi-Fi and Cancel buttons at the same time.
  
  The front light becomes purple and pulses.
Open the HP Smart app on your Android or Apple device. If you do not have HP Smart, download it from 123.hp.com or your app store.
In HP Smart, click the Plus sign , and follow the on-screen instructions to add your printer and complete the Wi-Fi connection.

If your mobile device is running Android OS 7.0 (Nougat) or later and you are unable to complete the printer setup, turn off the cellular data temporarily, and then try again.

HP Easy Start (Windows 7 and 8)

Install HP Easy Start, open the app, and then add your printer.

Download and install HP Easy Start from 123.hp.com/laserjet.
Open HP Easy Start, and then follow the on-screen instructions to connect to the network.

If the front light on the printer is not purple and pulsing, set the printer to Wireless Setup Mode.
1. Press and hold the Information button for three seconds and release.
  
  All control panel buttons light up.
2. Press the Wi-Fi and Cancel buttons at the same time.
  
  The front light becomes purple and pulses.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the printer setup.
