HP OfficeJet Pro 8700 Printers - 'Obstruction Detected' Error

This document is for HP OfficeJet Pro 8720, 8725, and 8740 All-in-One printers.
An Obstruction Detected message displays on the printer control panel, and the printer prints at a slower speed.
Step 1: Make sure the output tray is clear
The error displays if an object is blocking the output tray proximity sensor for more than 10 seconds.
Look around the output tray area, and remove any loose paper or objects in the printer path.

Try to print. If the error persists, continue to the next step.
Step 2: Clean the proximity sensor
Dust or debris can obstruct the proximity sensor, creating a false error.
  1. Use a lint-free cloth to gently clean the proximity sensor.
    The sensor is located on the right side of the output tray.

  2. Try to print.
    If the error persists, try cleaning the sensor again.
If the error persists after the second cleaning, continue to the next step.
Step 3: Service the printer
If the previous steps did not resolve the issue, service your printer.
Service or replace your HP product if you completed all preceding steps.
To see if your product is still under warranty, go to the warranty check website http://www.support.hp.com/checkwarranty. Contact HP Support to schedule a repair or replacement. If you are in Asia Pacific, Contact HP Support to find a local service center in your area.
Repair fees might apply for out-of-warranty products.
