HP LaserJet Enterprise M604, M605, M606 - Re-enable the Embedded Multi-Media Card (eMMC) after removing the hard-disk drive

Introduction
When a new hard-disk drive (HDD) is installed in the printer all data on the embedded multi-media card (eMMC) is automatically migrated to the HDD and erased from the eMMC.
If the HDD fails and needs to be replaced, the eMMC can be re-enabled by performing a firmware upgrade to the eMMC. This makes the printer usable until a replacement HDD can be procured.
Re-enable the eMMC
  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Remove the HDD.
  3. Perform the following product firmware upgrade procedure. The product firmware installs automatically to the eMMC.
    1. Do the one of the following:
      • In the U.S., go to www.hp.com/support/ljM604, www.hp.com/support/ljM605, or www.hp.com/support/ljM606.
        1. Select Drivers, Software, and Firmware, and then select Cross operating system (BIOS, Firmware, Diagnostics, etc.)
        2. Locate the firmware download, and then select Download.
      • Outside the U.S., go to www.hp.com/support.
        1. Select your country/region.
        2. Select Product Support & Troubleshooting.
        3. Enter the printer name, and then select Search. Select Drivers, Software, and Firmware, and then select Cross operating system (BIOS, Firmware, Diagnostics, etc.).
        4. Locate the firmware download, and then select Download.
    2. Copy the firmware upgrade file to the root directory of a USB flash drive. The firmware upgrade file has a .bdl extension.
    3. Insert the USB flash drive into the USB port near the printer control panel.
    4. Turn on the printer.
    5. The following message displays on the control panel: 99.39.67 eMMC Not Bootable. Touch the OK button to continue.
    6. Wait for the Pre-Boot menu to appear on the control-panel display, and then touch the down arrow button to scroll to 3 Administrator. Touch the OK button to select it.
    7. Touch the down arrow button to scroll to 1 Download. Touch the OK button to select it.
    8. Touch the down arrow button to scroll to 3 Download. Touch the OK button to select it.
    9. Several .bdl files might be listed. Touch the down arrow button to scroll to the firmware upgrade file that you downloaded previously. Touch the OK button to select it.
    10. Wait while the file transfers. When the transfer is complete, the message Complete displays on the screen.
    11. Turn the printer off, remove the USB flash drive, and then turn the printer on. Wait for several minutes while the printer initializes.
      • If the upgrade is unsuccessful, try sending the firmware upgrade file again.
      • If the upgrade is successful, the printer initializes successfully.
