HP Z620 Workstation - Removing and Replacing Serial Port Adapter

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the serial port adapter for the HP Z620 Workstation.
Minimum skill level
The End-User should possess product-specific knowledge and technical skill on how to service the system, and have familiarity with the operating system.

The replacement part number will vary depending on the serial port adapter that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

  note:
For customers in countries/regions with RoHS legislation (e.g. EU, China, etc.) restricting the use of hazardous substances in electrical equipment. The use of the "Original" spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Modified" spare number, the "Modified" spare part must be ordered as the replacement part. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Original" spare number, please order the "Original" spare number as the replacement part. In this case, either the "Original" or the "Modified" spare number may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

Serial port adapter removal

This video was developed using a pre-production version of the workstation. The chassis and parts shown might not exactly match the current production version, but the part removal and replacement steps are the same.
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to the product or loss of data.
  2. Disconnect the serial port adapter cable from the system board.
  3. Press the two release latches and rotate the PCI retention clamp until it is fully open.
  4. Remove the serial port adapter from the chassis.
      note:
    If customer is not replacing the serial port adapter with another option, cover the open slot on the PCI bulkhead with a metal slot cover.
Serial port adapter replacement
  1. If customer is installing a new serial port adapter, remove the slot cover from an unused slot on the PCI bulkhead.
  2. Position the serial port adapter in the slot.
  3. Rotate the PCI retention clamp down over the PCI bulkhead.
  4. Press the two PCI retention clamp tabs on the rear of the chassis until they lock into place.
  5. Connect the serial port adapter cable to the system board.
