HP Notebook PCs - Windows Media Center setup Fails when Updating PlayReady

This document pertains to the HP Pavilion dv4-4000 and dv6-6200 Entertainment Notebook PC series only.
During Windows Media Center setup, the setup process attempts to update PlayReady, but fails. An error message indicates that Windows Media Center cannot record and playback protected content without PlayReady.
In some cases, the PlayReady software may have been pre-installed on a notebook that is Windows Media Center-ready. Normally, the PlayReady software is installed by Windows Media Center as it updates itself, not before. If installed before any updates are made, then it actually prevents Windows Media Center from updating PlayReady properly. This can lead to an error during the setup process.
To resolve this issue, do the following:
  1. Run Windows Media Center and then follow the on-screen instructions to configure it.
  2. When the Update PlayReady window appears, select No and then click Next.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish setting up Windows Media Center.
The allows the Windows Media Center to bypass the PlayReady update process and complete the remainder of the setup process successfully. Once Windows Media Center has completed its setup process, the PlayReady software is updated accordingly.
