HP Deskjet F4400 Series All-in-One Printers - Cartridge Pops Out or Does Not Stay Installed in the Carriage

Issue

The cartridge pops out or does not stay installed in the carriage during the initial installation or while replacing the cartridge.

Solution

Follow these steps in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Step one: Make sure that the cartridge is compatible with the product

To check the cartridge compatibility for your product, go to HP SureSupply. To identify your cartridge in a language other than English, click the language link near the globe icon () in the upper right corner of your browser.

Step two: Remove the cartridges

  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
      caution:
If the product is turned off when opening the cartridge door, the product does not release the cartridges in order to change them. You might damage the product if the cartridges are not docked safely on the right side when removing them.
  2. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the far right side of the product.

  3. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent, lightly press down on each cartridge to release it, and then pull the cartridge toward you out of the slot.
    • To remove the tri-color cartridge, remove the cartridge from the slot on the left.
    • To remove the black or photo cartridge, remove the cartridge from the slot on the right.

      caution:
Do not touch the copper-colored contact or ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.
  4. Do not close the cartridge door at this time.

Step three: Reinstall the cartridges correctly

With the product turned on and the cartridge door still open, reinstall the cartridges in the product.
  1. Slide the cartridge at a slight upward angle into its slot in the carriage.
    • To install the tri-color cartridge, slide the cartridge into the slot on the left.
    • To install the black or photo cartridge, slide the cartridge into the slot on the right.

      caution:
When you install the cartridge and press it into the slot, do not rest your hand on top of the product for leverage. This might cause the carriage to lift out of position.
