HP EliteBook 8540p Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Switch Cover


This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the switch cover for the HP EliteBook 8540p Notebook PC.

Minimum skill level

The End-User should possess product-specific knowledge and technical skill on how to service the system, and have familiarity with the operating system.

Tools required

Small, Phillips-head (P00 and P1) screwdrivers

Parts required

Part numbers are subject to change.
The replacement part number will vary depending on the switch cover that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP

For customers in countries/regions with RoHS legislation* (e.g. EU, China, etc.) restricting the use of hazardous substances in electrical equipment. The use of the Original Spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If your unit contains a part that is labeled with the Modified Spare number, the Modified Spare must be ordered as the replacement part. If your unit contains a part that is labeled with the Original Spare number, please order the Original Spare as the replacement part. In this case either the Original Spare or the Modified Spare may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

Switch cover removal

  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2. On the bottom of the notebook, remove the three 4 mm P1 Phillips-head screws in the battery bay that secure the switch cover to the base enclosure.
  3. Turn the notebook right side up and open the display panel until it is completely horizontal.
  4.   caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
    Using minimal force, lift the locking bar up on the button board ZIF connector and disconnect the button board ribbon cable from the system board.
  5. Rotate the rear edge of the switch cover towards the front of the notebook until all tabs are free from the top cover.
  6. Remove the switch cover from the base enclosure.

Switch cover replacement

  1.   caution:
    Make sure that the button board ribbon cable is free from being pinched between the switch cover and the top cover.
    Toe the alignment tabs on the front edge of the switch cover into the slots on the top cover and lower the switch cover into place.
  2. Press along the entire length of the switch cover to snap it into place.
  3.   caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
    Insert the button board ribbon cable into the button board ZIF connector on the system board.
  4. Push the locking bar down to lock the button board ZIF connector.
  5. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  6. Replace the three 4 mm P1 Phillips-head screws inside the battery bay.
