HP EliteBook 8540p Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Wireless LAN module

Introduction

This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the wireless LAN module for the HP EliteBook 8540p Notebook PC.

Minimum skill level

The End-User should possess product-specific knowledge and technical skill on how to service the system, and have familiarity with the operating system.

Tools required

  • Tweezers
  • Small, Phillips-head (P00 and P1) screwdrivers

Wireless LAN module removal

  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2.   caution:
    Use care when disconnecting the wireless antenna cables from the wireless LAN module. Damaged cables or connectors can degrade notebook performance.
    Carefully disconnect the three wireless antenna cables from the wireless LAN module by grasping the connectors with a small pair of needle nose pliers or tweezers.
    note:
    Make careful note of which wireless antenna cable is connected to each terminal on the wireless LAN module for later replacement.
  3. Remove the two 3 mm P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the wireless LAN module to the system board and allow it to release to the spring tension position.
  4. Grasp the wireless LAN module by the edges and pull gently to remove it.
  5. Place the wireless LAN module in a static dissipative bag.

Wireless LAN module replacement

  1. Grasp the wireless LAN module by the edges and remove it from the static dissipative bag.
  2. Align the notch in the wireless LAN module with the key in the wireless LAN module slot on the system board.
  3. At an angle, gently insert the wireless LAN module into its slot on the system board.
  4. Press the wireless LAN module down and replace the two 3 mm P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the wireless LAN module to the system board.
  5.   caution:
    Use care when connecting the wireless antenna cables to the wireless LAN module. Damaged cables or connectors can degrade notebook performance.
    Reconnect the three wireless antenna cables to the wireless LAN module.
