HP Photosmart, Deskjet, and Officejet Printers - In Windows Vista, the Printer is No Longer Available in the List of Printers on the Network

This document explains how to install a software update to keep your HP Photosmart, Deskjet, or Officejet printer in the list of available printers in Windows Vista.
In Windows Vista, install a software update to keep your printer in the list of available printers
HP created a software update to resolve this issue. However, before you can install this update, you must remove the printer software, delete all temporary files, close all background programs, and then reinstall the printer software.
  note:
Some of the following steps require you to restart the computer. Consider bookmarking this page on your Web browser, so that you can reference it after you restart the computer.
Step one: Download, and then uninstall the software
Follow these steps to download the printer software from the HP website, and then uninstall the software from your computer.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. Go to HP Drivers & Downloads. If prompted, type your printer model number, click Go, and then click Drivers.
  4. Make sure that your operating system is selected, and then click Next.
  5. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver.
  6. Click Download, and then follow the on-screen instructions to save the software to your computer.
  7. Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads), and then double-click the file.
  8. When the installation screen launches, click Exit.
  9. Click Start (). Type %temp% in the Start Search box, and then press the Enter key. The Temp folder opens.
  10. Type Uninstall_L2 in the search box, located in the upper-right corner of the Temp screen.
  11. Click Advanced Search.
  12. On the left side of the Advanced Search screen, place a checkmark in the box next to Include non-indexed, hidden, and system files (might be slow).
Figure : Select 'Include non-indexed, hidden, and system files (might be slow)'
Image: Select 'Include non-indexed, hidden, and system files (might be slow)'
  13. Double-click the Uninstall_L2.bat file for a 32-bit Vista operating system, or the Uninstall_L2_64.bat file for a 64-bit Vista operating system, and then press the Enter key.
      note:
If the search results contain more than one, or only one, file named Uninstall_L2, double-click the first, or only, file in the list.
Figure : Select the 'Uninstall_L2' file
    Image: Select the 'Uninstall_L2' file
  14. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software removal.
Step two: Delete all temporary files
Follow these steps to delete all the temporary files from the Temp folder on your computer.
  1. Click Start (). In the Start Search box, type %temp%, and then press the Enter key.
  2. Click Organize, and then click Select All.
  3. Click Organize again, and then press the Delete key to delete the files.
      note:
Do not highlight or delete the Temp folder. Delete only the files in the folder.
  4. If an Access Denied message displays on the screen during the delete process, click OK to close the error message, and then continue to delete the remaining files.
Step three: Temporarily disable startup programs and non-Microsoft services
Occasionally, some startup programs and services prevent the printer software from installing correctly. Follow these steps to temporarily disable the startup programs and non-Microsoft services before you reinstall the printer software.
  1. Click the Windows icon ().
  2. In the Start Search box, type msconfig, and then press the Enter key. The System Configuration Utility window opens.
  3. If the User Account Control window opens with the message, 'Windows needs your permission to continue', click Continue.
  4. Click the Startup tab, and then make a note of the current settings. Later in this document, you have the option to re-enable the same programs and services that are currently selected. If, however, you opt for Normal Startup later, and do not need to specify which programs and services to re-enable, you do not need to note the current settings.
  5. Click Selective Startup, and then clear the Load Startup Items checkbox.
  6. Click the Services tab, click the Hide all Microsoft services checkbox at the bottom of the screen, and then click Disable All.
  7. Click Apply, and then click OK. A new window displays.
  8. Click Restart to continue.
When the computer restarts, the message 'You’ve used system configuration utility to make changes to the way windows starts' displays on the Windows desktop.
  9. Select the Do not show this message again checkbox, and then click OK.
Step four: Reinstall the printer software
Follow these steps to download and install the printer software from the HP webiste.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. If your printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer.
  3. If prompted, select a method to identify your printer model, and then follow the on-screen instructions to go to the download page.
  4. Click Download next to the full feature driver (recommended), or click Basic Drivers for other driver options.
Step five: Re-enable the startup programs and services
After installing the software, you can now re-enable the startup programs and non-Microsoft services.
  1. Click the Windows icon ().
  2. In the Start Search box, type msconfig, and then press the Enter key. The System Configuration Utility window opens.
  3. If the User Account Control window opens with the message, 'Windows needs your permission to continue', click Continue.
  4. Select the startup programs and services to enable:
    • If you want to re-enable the same programs and services that were selected before you disabled them, or if changes need to be made to the startup programs and services, follow these steps.
      1. Click the Startup tab, and then checkmark the programs you wish to enable.
      2. Click the Services tab, select the Hide all Microsoft services checkbox at the bottom of the screen, and then checkmark the services you wish to enable.
    • If you want the computer to select the normal programs and services to re-enable, click the General tab, and then select the Normal Startup checkbox.
  5. Click Apply, and then click OK. A new window displays.
  6. Click Restart to continue.
Step six: Install the software update
You are now ready to download and install the critical software update that HP created to resolve this issue.
  1. Thoroughly review the information on the download information page, and then follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the software update.
  2. When the installation process completes, restart the computer and the printer, and then try to print.
