Explanation/solution one
|
One or both cartridges are missing.
Follow these steps to install a new cartridge.

Open the cartridge door.
The carriage moves to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

Remove the new cartridge from its packaging.

Remove the pink protective tape from the new cartridge.

caution:
Do not touch the copper-colored electrical contacts or the ink nozzles on the cartridge. Doing so can cause electrical connection issues, clogged ink nozzles, and print quality issues.

Hold the cartridge by its sides with the copper-colored contacts facing toward the product, and then slide the cartridge into its color-coded slot. Make sure that the icon on the cartridge matches the icon on the slot. Then push the cartridge in until it snaps into place.

The product is designed to prevent inserting a cartridge into the wrong slot.

Close the cartridge door.

Explanation/solution two
|
One or both cartridges are seated improperly.
Follow these steps to remove a cartridge and reseat it.

Open the cartridge door.
The carriage moves to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

Press down on the indicated cartridge to release it, and then pull the cartridge out to remove it from its slot.

Check for protective tape on the nozzles. If protective tape is present, remove it without touching the copper-colored contacts or the nozzles.

Hold the cartridge by its sides with the copper-colored contacts facing toward the product, and then slide the cartridge into its color-coded slot. Make sure that the icon on the cartridge matches the icon on the slot. Then push the cartridge in until it snaps into place.

|
The indicated cartridges are incompatible with the product.
Follow these instructions to check the compatibility of the cartridges:

To find a complete list of compatible cartridges, do the following:

Click the language selection link next to the globe icon.

From the drop-down lists, select the appropriate Language and Location, and then click Save.

Enter your product number, and then press Enter. A list of compatible cartridges appears.
- If either of the cartridge numbers is not in the list, replace the cartridge with a new one that is in the list.

Explanation/solution four
|
The carriage is jammed (both cartridge error indicators blinking).
Follow each of these steps until the carriage moves freely/

Turn the product off, and then turn it on.

Clear all paper jams.
-
Check that the carriage moves freely.
-
Remove the cartridges, and then reinstall them.
-
Plug the product directly into a wall outlet.
-
Turn the product off, unplug the power cord, wait 30 seconds, plug the power cord in, and turn the product on.

Explanation/solution five
|
The indicated cartridges are defective.
Follow these steps to replace a defective cartridge.

Remove the indicated cartridge.
-
Remove the new cartridge from its packaging.
-
Remove the pink protective tape from the new cartridge.

|
The indicated cartridges need cleaning.
Follow these steps to clean the area surrounding the ink nozzles on the indicated cartridges.

Open the cartridge door.
The carriage moves to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

Press down on the cartridge to release it, and then pull it out of its slot.
caution:
Do not remove both cartridges at the same time. Do not leave a cartridge outside the product
for more than 30 minutes.

Place the cartridge on a piece of paper with the ink nozzles facing up.
-
Moisten a clean, foam-rubber swab with distilled water.
-
Clean the face and edges around the ink nozzle with the swab.

Do not clean the ink nozzle plate.

Let the cartridge sit for 10 minutes to allow the cleaned area to dry, or use a clean swab to dry it.

Explanation/solution seven
|
The cartridge might not have full electrical contact with the product.
Follow these steps to clean the electrical contacts on the indicated cartridges.

Gather the following items to clean the cartridge and carriage:
-
Clean, distilled water. Use bottled or filtered water if distilled water is not available. Tap water can contain contaminants that damage the cartridge.
-
Clean cotton swabs or any soft, lint-free material that does not stick to the cartridges (coffee filters work well).
-
Sheets of paper or a paper towel to rest the cartridges on during cleaning.
-
Open the cartridge door.
The carriage moves to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

Press down on the cartridge to release it, and then pull it out of its slot. Place the cartridge on a piece of paper with the nozzle plate facing up.

note:
Clean the copper-colored electrical contacts quickly so that the cartridge is not outside of the product for more than 30 minutes. If the cartridge is outside of the product for too long, the ink can dry and clog the nozzles.

Unplug the product.
-
Dip a swab in the water and squeeze it to remove most of the moisture. The swab should be only slightly damp.
-
Clean the copper-colored electrical contacts. Do not touch the ink nozzles.

Clean the contacts in the carriage, inside the product.

Either let the cartridge sit for 10 minutes to allow the cleaned area to dry or use a new swab to dry it.

Reinstall the cartridge.
-
Plug in the power cord.

Close the cartridge door.
