Blinking Lights on the HP Deskjet D5560 and D5568 Printers

Introduction

The lights and indicators on the control panel can display in combinations to indicate messages, status, and error conditions. The Power light (), the Resume light (), the Ink Level indicators (), and the Error light can each turn on, turn off, blink fast, or blink slow to display the combinations.

This document describes the patterns that the control panel displays as "blinking" or "flashing." In this document, flashing means the same as blinking.

Blinking lights and indicators

The following sections describe the most common display combinations with explanations and steps to solve the issues. Find the combination that the product is displaying, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.
note:
Some display combinations might have more than one solution. Try each solution to resolve the issue.

The product is out of paper.
Follow these steps to load paper.
  1. Pull out the paper tray extension.

  2. Flip up the paper stop at the end of the extension.

  3. Slide the paper-width guide to its outermost position.

  4. Load paper into the paper tray with the print-side down. Slide the paper forward until it stops.

  6. Press the Resume button ().
Explanation/solution two
Paper is jammed in the product.
Follow these steps to clear a paper jam.
Step one: Remove loose paper
Remove all loose paper from the paper tray and the output tray.
  caution:
Do not remove jammed paper at this stage. Attempting to clear jammed paper from the front of the product can damage the print mechanism.
Step two: Clear the jam from the back of the printer
  1. Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
  2. Turn the product around to access the rear access side.
  3. Press the handle at the end of the rear access door opposite the power cord to release the rear access door, and then pull the door out.

  4. Carefully remove any jammed paper from the back of the product.
  5. Replace the rear access door, and snap it into place.

Step three: Open the cartridge door and clear the jam
  1. Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet and from the back of the product.
  2. Open the cartridge door.

  3. Gently remove all jammed paper.
      caution:
    Remove the jammed paper carefully. Incorrectly removing paper from the front of the product can damage the printing mechanism.
  4. Make sure that no scraps of paper remain between the rollers.
  5. Close the cartridge door.

  6. Plug the power cord into the electrical outlet and into the back of the product.
  7. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
  8. Press the Resume button ().

Follow these steps to install a new cartridge.
  1. Open the cartridge door.
    The carriage moves to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

  2. Remove the new cartridge from its packaging.
  3. Remove the pink protective tape from the new cartridge.

      caution:
    Do not touch the copper-colored electrical contacts or the ink nozzles on the cartridge. Doing so can cause electrical connection issues, clogged ink nozzles, and print quality issues.

  4. Hold the cartridge by its sides with the copper-colored contacts facing toward the product, and then slide the cartridge into its color-coded slot. Make sure that the icon on the cartridge matches the icon on the slot. Then push the cartridge in until it snaps into place.

    The product is designed to prevent inserting a cartridge into the wrong slot.
    • Insert the tri-color cartridge in the slot closest to the control panel.
    • Insert the black cartridge in the slot farthest from the control panel.
  5. Close the cartridge door.
Explanation/solution two
One or both cartridges are seated improperly.
Follow these steps to remove a cartridge and reseat it.
  1. Open the cartridge door.
    The carriage moves to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

  2. Press down on the indicated cartridge to release it, and then pull the cartridge out to remove it from its slot.
  3. Check for protective tape on the nozzles. If protective tape is present, remove it without touching the copper-colored contacts or the nozzles.

      caution:
    Do not touch the copper-colored electrical contacts or the ink nozzles on the cartridge. Doing so can cause electrical connection issues, clogged ink nozzles, and print quality issues.

  4. Hold the cartridge by its sides with the copper-colored contacts facing toward the product, and then slide the cartridge into its color-coded slot. Make sure that the icon on the cartridge matches the icon on the slot. Then push the cartridge in until it snaps into place.

    The product is designed to prevent inserting a cartridge into the wrong slot.
    • The black cartridge goes into the slot farthest from the control panel.
    • The tri-color cartridge goes into the slot closest to the control panel.
  5. Close the cartridge door.

Explanation/solution three
The indicated cartridges are incompatible with the product.
Follow these instructions to check the compatibility of the cartridges:
  1. Open the cartridge door.
    The carriage moves to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

  2. Find the number on the label on top of the cartridges.

  3. Make a note of the cartridge number printed on the label of each cartridge, and then close the cartridge door.
  4. Review the following table for cartridge compatibility:

    To find a complete list of compatible cartridges, do the following:
    1. Click the language selection link next to the globe icon.

    2. From the drop-down lists, select the appropriate Language and Location, and then click Save.
    3. Enter your product number, and then press Enter. A list of compatible cartridges appears.
  5. If either of the cartridge numbers is not in the list, replace the cartridge with a new one that is in the list.
Explanation/solution four
The carriage is jammed (both cartridge error indicators blinking).
Follow each of these steps until the carriage moves freely/

  1. Turn the product off, and then turn it on.
  2. Clear all paper jams.
  3. Check that the carriage moves freely.
  4. Remove the cartridges, and then reinstall them.
  5. Plug the product directly into a wall outlet.
  6. Turn the product off, unplug the power cord, wait 30 seconds, plug the power cord in, and turn the product on.
Explanation/solution five
The indicated cartridges are defective.
Follow these steps to replace a defective cartridge.
  1. Remove the indicated cartridge.
  2. Remove the new cartridge from its packaging.
  3. Remove the pink protective tape from the new cartridge.
      caution:
    Do not touch the copper-colored electrical contacts or the ink nozzles on the cartridge. Doing so can cause electrical connection issues, clogged ink nozzles, and print quality issues.
  4. Hold the cartridge by its sides with the nozzles toward the product, and then slide the cartridge into its color-coded slot until it snaps into place. Make sure that the icon on the cartridge matches the icon on the slot.
    The product is designed to prevent inserting a cartridge into the wrong slot.
    • The tri-color cartridge goes in the slot closest to the control panel.
    • The black cartridge goes in the slot farthest from the control panel.
Explanation/solution six
The indicated cartridges need cleaning.
Follow these steps to clean the area surrounding the ink nozzles on the indicated cartridges.
  1. Open the cartridge door.
    The carriage moves to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

  2. Press down on the cartridge to release it, and then pull it out of its slot.
      caution:
    Do not remove both cartridges at the same time. Do not leave a cartridge outside the product for more than 30 minutes.

  3. Place the cartridge on a piece of paper with the ink nozzles facing up.
  4. Moisten a clean, foam-rubber swab with distilled water.
  5. Clean the face and edges around the ink nozzle with the swab.
      caution:
    Do not clean the ink nozzle plate.

  6. Let the cartridge sit for 10 minutes to allow the cleaned area to dry, or use a clean swab to dry it.
  7. Hold the cartridge by its sides with the nozzles toward the product, and then slide the cartridge into its color-coded slot until it snaps into place. Make sure that the icon on the cartridge matches the icon on the slot.

  8. Close the cartridge door.

  9. Try printing again.
Explanation/solution seven
The cartridge might not have full electrical contact with the product.
Follow these steps to clean the electrical contacts on the indicated cartridges.
  1. Gather the following items to clean the cartridge and carriage:
    • Clean, distilled water. Use bottled or filtered water if distilled water is not available. Tap water can contain contaminants that damage the cartridge.
    • Clean cotton swabs or any soft, lint-free material that does not stick to the cartridges (coffee filters work well).
    • Sheets of paper or a paper towel to rest the cartridges on during cleaning.
  2. Open the cartridge door.
    The carriage moves to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

  3. Press down on the cartridge to release it, and then pull it out of its slot. Place the cartridge on a piece of paper with the nozzle plate facing up.

    note:
    Clean the copper-colored electrical contacts quickly so that the cartridge is not outside of the product for more than 30 minutes. If the cartridge is outside of the product for too long, the ink can dry and clog the nozzles.
  4. Unplug the product.
  5. Dip a swab in the water and squeeze it to remove most of the moisture. The swab should be only slightly damp.
  6. Clean the copper-colored electrical contacts. Do not touch the ink nozzles.

  7. Clean the contacts in the carriage, inside the product.

  8. Either let the cartridge sit for 10 minutes to allow the cleaned area to dry or use a new swab to dry it.
  9. Reinstall the cartridge.
  10. Plug in the power cord.
  11. Close the cartridge door.

Follow these steps to reset the product.
  1. Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
    note:
    The product might not turn off after pressing the Power button. Continue to the next step regardless.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the product.
  3. Disconnect the power cord from the electrical outlet.
  4. Wait 60 seconds.
  5. Reconnect the power cord to the electrical outlet.
  6. Reconnect the power cord to the back of the product.
  7. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
Explanation/solution two
The product is in a fatal error state.
Contact HP to troubleshoot the fatal error.
