HP and Compaq Desktop PCs - Error: Microsoft Works 8 has Stopped Working (Windows Vista)

This document applies to HP and Compaq computers with Microsoft Works 8.5.
The following error messages appear when I am working in the Microsoft Works Spreadsheet or Microsoft Works Database application. What can I do to avoid these messages?

The error messages appear after accessing the Format or Print menu in the Microsoft Works Spreadsheet or Database application. The problem is with the default printer selected in Windows. If the default printer is set to the HP PhotoSmart 2570 series, for example, the error appears.

Resolution
Download and install Microsoft Works 8 Spreadsheet and Works 8 Database Printing Update (in English) from Microsoft.
Avoid the error
If you cannot download the update to resolve the problem, follow these steps to avoid getting the error messages:
  1. Change the default printer to Microsoft XPS Document Writer:
    1. Click Start , Control Panel, and under Hardware and Sound, click Printer.
    2. Right-click Microsoft XPS Document Writer, and in the pop-up menu click Set as Default Printer.
  2. Open the Microsoft Works program you want to print.
  3. Select File, Print, OK.
  4. In the dialog that opens, specify the file name and location of the document.

An xps extension will be appended to the file name.
When you double-click the file (with the xps extension), Internet Explorer automatically launches and opens the file. With Microsoft XPS Document Writer as the default printer, an XML Paper Specification (XPS) document is created. It can be viewed or printed from any browser.
