Learn how to register a speed on a new printer or upgrade the speed on an existing printer using a speed license.
This document was last updated 04/05/2023.
Newer HP LaserJet Managed MFP models can configure the printer speed using a virtual license.
The license can be registered on a new printer or upgraded on an existing printer using a redemption code, and then registering the license. The license contains the speed and model name.
The printer speed can be increased at any time by purchasing a speed upgrade which will provide a new redemption code.
If a speed license is not activated, the printer will operate at the default engine speed. After activating a license on an existing printer, the printer speed will be updated.
The method used to upgrade the printer speed might vary depending on the printer’s access to the internet, and whether or not the printer is being registered locally or remotely.
After the speed license has been ordered, you will receive an email with a redemption code which will be used to obtain the speed license. The redemption code will be used to register the printer via the control panel, the Embedded Web Server (EWS), or HP Web Jetadmin.
First the redemption code is used to obtain the license, and then the license is assigned by registering the printer via the control panel, the Embedded Web Server (EWS), or HP Web Jetadmin.
The method used varies depending on printer access to the internet, and whether or not the printer is being registered locally or remotely.
When complete, the license is then associated with the specific printer and serial number. This is known as Late Point Differentiation Configuration (LPDC).

Before the speed license can be installed, the redemption code must first be obtained in order to access or download the license.
Before you begin, you will need the Order Number to perform this step. The Order Number can be found within the activation email. Up to 6 email addresses can be assigned to an order number.
If the printer is brand new or unpacking a new printer, first follow the instructions in the Engine Install Guide that came
with the printer to acclimate, unpack, and physically set up and then initialize the printer and wait for it to arrive at
a Ready
state.
Learn how to use the redemption code to download the speed license from the HP Printer License Activation and Management web site.
You will need the printer Serial Number, model number, and the speed license Redemption Code to perform this step.
If the printer is already connected to the network, the printer can obtain the speed license from the HP Cloud using the redemption code and you can skip this step if preferred.
For example, if you want to install a speed license on multiple printers in an environment that does not have internet access for the printers, but does have a pc that is internet-connected, you can manually redeem the registration code to download the speed license to a USB storage drive, and then register and assign the speed license to the printer(s) later using either the control panel or the Embedded Web Server (after the printer is connected to the network).
When an inner finisher is installed the printer cannot exceed 60 pages-per minute (ppm). Do not install a speed license higher than 60 ppm for a printer with an inner finisher installed.

Using private key cryptography, both the license and the data is passed securely from the printer to the HP Cloud when the printer is connected to a network. The printer uses the HP JetAdvantage Management (JAM) Activation site (https://activation.jamanagement.hp.com/) to obtain the license.
If the printer is not connected to the network, the speed license can also be installed later by obtaining the redemption code, downloading the speed license to a USB storage drive, and then registering it using one of several methods.
Use either the control panel or the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to register and assign a speed license from either the HP Cloud or a USB storage device.
Do not turn the printer power off during a speed license installation.
For instructions on how to register and assign a speed license using Web Jetadmin, refer to the HP Web Jetadmin User Guide.

When a speed license is activated on the device, the device will require a reboot and will retain all settings after the reboot accept the device name which will change to append the new speed to the end of the name and the Max sleep time is reset to factory defaults.
The product will retain its base model number and will simply update the speed at the end, e.g. HP Color LaserJet E87740 becomes an HP Color LaserJet E87750. This change will be recognized in the License Management menu, on the printer’s configuration page and in the Embedded Web Server.

Yes, follow the instructions on www.hp.com/go/speed-license to redeem and apply your license manually.
No. Pagewide A3 and current LaserJet A3 products introduced prior to Spring of 2022 will stay with the current LPD 1.0 process. The LPD portal will have two paths for license registration depending on whether you have a new product which uses WW LPD 2.0 vs a legacy product.
The location and URL for the LPD Portal is not changing. https://activation.jamanagement.hp.com. This site is accessed through the HP Partner Portal and can only be accessed by Authorized Partners.
However, you will see a new name for the Portal: “HP Printer License Management and Activation” and you will see two paths for License registration and installation (Legacy vs new products).
If you are an authorized partner for HP Managed Skus, the primary access is through the HP Partner Portal.
If you are not authorized to sell HP Managed skus but require access to the LPD WW portal because you provide installation services for HP, there is a web tool for speed license management via the HP Business Partner Portal (SBSO) that can be used.
After login, click Customize my Dashboard, add the “HP Device Speed Option License" Widget to your dashboard, and then click the 'X' to close the selection.
The license registration and activation process has been significantly improved to make it faster, easier, and more available to partners around the world to participate in the benefits. Some changes include the following highlights:
License is no longer required for products to run at base (lowest) speed, eliminating the process entirely for many skus.
Speed licenses may be installed at any time during the life of the product, enabling new opportunities for upsell.
Speed licenses do not have to be associated with serial numbers prior to ordering, simplifying the order process
Speed licensing is now available to all countries, simplifying inventory and forecasting.
Up to 4 hours turn-around time, depending on the timing of the order (provided the order contains all necessary information).
The speed license, after installed, is good for the entire product life. The speed can be upgraded multiple times as needed throughout the products life.
No, there is no expiration date on redemption codes.
At this time, this capability is not available.
At this time, there is no downgrade process for the products speed license.
Carepack price logic is based on the device platform and is no longer dependent on the speed of the device.
