HP PCs - Updating drivers using Windows update (Windows 11, 10)

Update your Windows 11 or Windows 10 computer using Windows Update.

1. In Windows, search for and open Check for updates.

   If there are any available updates, they begin automatically.

   Note:

   To download and install optional updates, use the following instructions for your operating system:

   • In Windows 11, select Advanced options > Optional updates, select the updates that you want to install, and then click Download & install.

   • In Windows 10, select View all optional updates, select the updates that you want to install, and then click Download and install.

2. After the updates install, restart your computer when prompted.

You can configure the computer to automatically update the system firmware (BIOS) using Device Manager.

1. Search for and open Device Manager.

   

2. Expand Firmware.

3. Double-click System Firmware.

   

4. Select the Driver tab.

5. Click Update Driver.

   

6. Click Search automatically for drivers.

   

7. Wait for the update to download and then follow the instructions.

In Windows 11, you can set active hours to prevent your computer from updating during those hours you are working.

1. Search for and open Windows Update settings.

2. Click Advanced options.

   

3. Click Active hours.

   

4. Under Adjust active hours, select one of the following:

   • Manually: Select a Start time and an End time, and then click the check icon.

   • Automatically

   

In Windows 10, you can set active hours to prevent your computer from updating during those hours you are working.

1. Search for and open Windows Update settings.

2. Click Change active hours.

3. Select a Start time and End time.

   

4. Click Save.

If Windows Updates downloads a driver update that causes the hardware to fail, you can disable the update.

1. Uninstall the driver and install the working version or restore the previous version.

   • Uninstall: In Windows, search for and open Device Manager. Right-click the faulty driver, and then click Uninstall device. Reinstall the working driver version.

   • Restore: In Windows, search for and open Device Manager. Right-click the faulty driver, and then click Properties. Click the Driver tab, and then select Roll Back Driver.

2. To block Windows from downloading the driver update again, download the Show or Hide updates tool from Microsoft.

3. Run the tool and wait while it scans for pending updates.

4. Click Hide updates.

5. Select the faulty driver in the list.

2. Configure the following settings:

   • Receive updates for other Microsoft products: Enable Windows Update to update other Microsoft product drivers and apps when updating Windows.

   • Download updates over metered connections: Set updates to wait for your approval to help manage data on a limited data plan.

   • Notify me when a restart is required to finish updating: Enable Windows to prompt you when you need to restart your computer to finish an update.

   • Active hours: Prevent your computer from updating during those hours that you are working.

   • Optional updates: Select available feature, quality, and driver updates.

   • Delivery Optimization: Download Windows updates from other computer, which can be faster.

   • Recovery: Troubleshoot problems without resetting your PC, reset your PC, remove the latest updates, or configure advanced startup options.

   • Restart apps: Enables apps to automatically restart when you sign out or sign in.

   • Configured update policies: Configure update policies on your device.

     Note:

     If you have a business PC managed by IT or are a member of the Windows Insider Program, you might not be able to set update policies.

Yes. If a specific hardware component is not working correctly, you can update it in Device Manager.

1. In Windows, search for and open Device Manager.

2. In the list of devices, expand the component that you want to update.

   

3. Right-click the device, and then click Update driver.

   

4. Click Search automatically for drivers, and then follow the on-screen instructions.

   

5. Restart your computer to complete the installation.
