HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 Color MFP M575/Flow MFP 575 - Removal and replacement: Hard disk drive (HDD)

This document provides the procedures to remove and replace the hard disk drive.

Important:

When applicable, special installation instructions are provided for an assembly at the end of the removal procedure. Always completely read the removal instructions and follow all special installation instructions.

Before performing service

Turn the printer power off

  • Disconnect the power cable.

    Warning:

    To avoid damage to the printer, turn the printer off, wait 30 seconds, and then remove the power cord before attempting to service the printer.

Required tools

  • No special tools are required to install this kit.

After performing service

Turn the printer power on

  • Connect the power cable.

  • Use the power switch to turn the power on.

Post service test

Make sure that the printer initializes to a Ready state.

Print a configuration page to make sure that the printer is functioning correctly.

Remove the formatter PCA

Follow these steps to remove the formatter PCA.

CAUTION:

ESD sensitive component.

  1. Unscrew the formatter thumb screws, and then firmly pull the formatter from the product. Place the formatter on a clean, flat, grounded surface.

    Tip:

    Reverse the removal steps to install the assembly.

    When reinstalling the formatter, push firmly on the right side to make sure the formatter is seated.

Remove the fax PCA and cable

Follow these steps to remove the fax PCA and cable.

CAUTION:

ESD sensitive component.

  1. Disconnect one connector.

    Remove the fax PCA and cable (1 of 2)

    Remove the fax PCA and cable
  2. Release two tabs and then remove the fax PCA.

    Note:

    If necessary, disconnect the cable from the fax PCA.

    Note:

    Set this part aside. It will be installed on the replacement formatter.

    Tip:

    Reverse the removal steps to install the assembly.

Remove the hard disk drive (HDD)

Follow these steps to remove the hard disk drive (HDD).

CAUTION:

ESD sensitive component.

Note:

The product has a hard disk drive (HDD) installed. If you install a replacement disk drive, you must reload the product firmware.

  1. Release the locking lever to release the HDD.

  2. Hold the locking lever in the release position, and then slide the HDD toward the edge of the formatter to remove it.

    Tip:

    When the HDD is reinstalled, make sure that the HDD is fully seated and that the locking lever snaps into the locked position.

  3. Separate the plastic side rails (callout 1) from the hard drive, and then slide (callout 2) the plastic cover from the hard drive.

    CAUTION:

    The plastic rails can be tight fitting. Remove carefully to avoid breaking.

    Note:

    Set this part aside. It will be installed on the replacement formatter.

    Tip:

    Reverse the removal steps to install the assembly.

Unpack the replacement assembly

Follow these steps to unpack the replacement assembly.

  1. Dispose of the defective part.

    Note:

    HP recommends responsible disposal of the defective part.

  2. Unpack the replacement part from the packaging.

    CAUTION:

    Some parts are sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD). Always perform service work at an ESD-protected workstation or mat. If an ESD workstation or mat is not available, touch the sheet-metal chassis to provide a static ground before touching an ESD-sensitive assembly. Protect the ESD-sensitive assemblies by placing them in ESD pouches when they are out of the printer.

    Important:

    Make sure that all of the shipping materials (for example shipping tape) are removed from the replacement part prior to installation.

    Note:

    If the replacement part is a roller or pad, avoid touching the spongy part of it. Skin oils on the roller or pad can cause paper pickup and/or print-quality problems. HP recommends using disposable gloves when handling rollers or pads or washing your hands before touching rollers or pads.

  3. To install an assembly, reverse the removal steps.

    Note:

    When applicable, special installation instructions are provided for an assembly at the end of the removal procedure. Always completely read the removal instructions and follow all special installation instructions.

Install the printer firmware

Follow these steps to install the printer firmware.

Note:

To download the most recent firmware upgrade for the product, go to www.hp.com/support/lj500colorMFPM575.

  1. Copy the xxxxxxx.bdl file to a portable USB flash drive.

  2. Turn the product on.

  3. The HP logo displays on the product control panel. When an underscore displays below the HP logo, touch the logo to open the Preboot menu.

  4. Touch the down arrow button to highlight Administrator, and then touch the OK button.

    Note:

    You might be prompted to enter a password to access the Administrator menu. Type the password, and then touch the OK button.

  5. Touch the down arrow button to highlight Download, and then touch the OK button.

  6. Insert the USB flash drive with the xxxxxxx.bdl file on it.

    Note:

    If the error message No USB Thumbdrive Files Found displays on the control-panel display, you might need to connect the storage device to the external USB connection on the formatter or try using a different portable storage device.

  7. Touch the down arrow button to highlight USB Thumbdrive, and then touch the OK button.

  8. Touch the down arrow button to highlight the xxxxxxx.bdl file, and then touch the OK button.

    Note:

    The upgrade process can take up to 10 minutes to complete.

    Tip:

    If there is more than one xxxxxxx.bdl file on the storage device, make sure that you select the correct file for this product.

  9. When the message Complete displays on the control-panel display, touch the back arrow button 3 times.

  10. When the message Continue displays on the control-panel display, touch the OK button. The product will initialize.

  11. When the upgrade process is complete, print a configuration page and verify that the upgrade firmware version was installed.
