HP LaserJet Pro M501 - Setting up the printer (hardware)

This document explains how to set up the physical parts of the printer. Complete these steps before installing the printer software on the computer.
If the printer hardware is already set up, see Links to software installation instructions at the end of this document for help with software installation.
Follow the steps below to set up the printer.
The following video demonstrates how to unpack and set up the printer:

Step one: Unpack the printer

  1. Select a site to place the printer that meets the following specifications:
    • A sturdy, well-ventilated, dust-free area, away from direct sunlight
    • Temperature range: 15° - 32.5° C
    • Humidity range: 30% - 80%
Allow enough space around the printer to open all doors and trays.
    The printer weighs 11.6 kg.
HP recommends that two people move the printer.

  2. Take the HP printer out of the box, and then remove the packaging material. Verify that the contents match this illustration.
HP recommends recycling packing materials whenever possible.

Step two: Load Tray 2

  1. Remove the tray completely from the printer.
Do not open the tray while it is in use.
    Figure : Open the tray
  2. Adjust the paper guides by squeezing the adjustment latch on the left guide and sliding the guides to the size of the paper being used.

  3. Load paper into the tray.
Do not adjust the paper guides tightly against the paper stack. Adjust them to the indentations or markings in the tray.
To prevent jams, adjust the paper guides to the correct size and do not overfill the tray. Be sure that the top of the stack is below the tray full indicators, as shown in the enlargement in the illustration.
If the tray is not adjusted correctly, an error message might display during printing or the paper might jam.

  4. Slide the tray completely into the printer.

Step three: Connect the power cable

  1. Connect the power cable between the printer and a grounded AC outlet. To prevent damage to the printer, use only the power cable that is provided with the printer.
Make sure the power source is adequate for the printer voltage rating. The voltage rating is on the printer label. The printer uses either 110-127 Vac or 220-240 Vac and 50/60 Hz.
UPS backup systems might not provide enough power for HP LaserJet printers and might signal an alarm when used. For best results, HP recommends plugging the printer into a protected circuit.

Step four: Insert a USB drive to enable job storage (optional)

To enable job-storage printing, insert a USB thumb drive into the back USB port. The drive must be USB 2.0 or later with a minimum of 16 GB of memory.

Step five: Turn on the printer

  1. Turn the printer power on.

Step six: Connect the network cable (optional)

If the printer is to be connected to a network, connect the network cable now.
Do not connect a USB cable now. To use a USB cable to connect the printer to the computer, connect it when prompted during software installation.
Wait for 60 seconds before continuing. During this time, if the printer is connected to a network, the network recognizes the printer and assigns an IP address or host name for the printer.
For advanced setup of network-connected printers, enter the printer IP address in the address bar of a Web browser after software installation is complete.

Step seven: Verify the printer functions

  1. To verify that the printer prints, complete the following steps:
    1. On the printer control panel, press the Setup button.
    2. Open the Reports menu.
    3. Select Configuration Report.
    4. If the printer is connected to a network, find the IP address on the Jetdirect page.
      • IPv4: If the IP address is, or, or 169.254.x.x, manually configure the IP address. Otherwise, the network configuration was successful.
      • IPv6: If the IP address begins with "fe80:", the printer should be able to print. If not, manually configure the IP address.
      Figure : Jetdirect page
  2. On the printer control panel, press the Setup button.
  3. Open the System Setup menu to configure the following basic functions:
After installing the software, more advanced setup is available by entering the printer IP address in the address bar of a Web browser.
    • Language
    • Date/Time
    • Energy settings

Step eight: Update the firmware (optional but recommended)

HP regularly updates features that are available in the printer firmware. Update the printer firmware to take advantage of the most current features.
Check with the network administrator before updating the printer firmware.
For information on updating the printer firmware, see Update the firmware (c03754273).
