HP Latex 3000 Printer Series - Firmware and IPS functionality of dual-roll independent queue management

This document describes the new firmware and IPS functionality of the dual-roll independent queue management system in the Latex 3000 printer.
  • Dual-Roll Independent Queue Management is available with the following firmware and IPS versions:
    • Firmware: HPLatex3000_04_01_01.x
    • IPS: v2013.2.30.7
  • The Caldera and Onyx RIP versions with the ability to select roll destination are:
    • ONYX 10.2.5 - 10.2.5.500
    • ONYX 11 - 11.0.0.137
Please note that the version downloaded using the Profile Download Manager may be newer than these.
    • Caldera calpatch: Hp-HP-Latex-3000-WithProfiles-920-a.calpatch
First, upgrade your RIP engine to Caldera 9.20 and get the latest patch, before installing this driver.
Please refer to the newsletter "HP Latex 3000 Printer Series – Firmware version 04_01_01.8 and IPS version 2013.2.30.7 available" for more details about appropriate RIP and driver versions.

Overview

The following image shows the IPS and the new components (dual-roll loaded).
  1. Roll 1 queue. Roll 1 is located at the right-hand side of the printer – the IPS screen side (capping/wiping station).
  2. Roll 2 queue. Roll 2 is located at the left-hand side of the printer – the Ink Supply Module side.
  3. Job thumbnail. Shows the current job. Only one image is shown in Step and Repeat, and all images are shown if the job has nested images.
    note:
This new functionality is also provided for single-roll queue management.
  4. Queue preview. Shows how the check-marked jobs are going to be printed.
  5. Move a job from one roll queue to the other.
  6. Auto-arrange. Move the jobs from one roll to the other automatically (to save printing material).
  7. Lock/Unlock a job. When locked, the roll selection is fixed and auto-arrange will not move it.
    note:
The job can still be moved manually.
  8. Lock/Unlock all the checked jobs in the roll.
    note:
This is only available when at least one of the jobs in the roll queue is selected; the same applies for arrows and the waste-basket.
  9. NOTICE: job information is missing in this first release.

Selecting a roll number

In the IPS

The job roll preference will be automatically set depending on how the jobs are added to the IPS:
  1. From File → Add New Job… default to the setting in the xml file.
  2. From the roll 1 queue default to Roll 1, no matter what the xml file setting is.
  3. From the roll 2 queue default to Roll 2, no matter what the xml file setting is.
Then, at the job properties window, the setting can be changed using the "Job roll preference" drop down.

In the RIP: Onyx

Quick set selection
When creating or editing a quick set Roll selection you can:
  • Configure printer → Quick sets → New
    OR
  • Edit quick sets → Edit
  • Then go to Print options.
Change the setting using the "Roll selection" drop down.
Selected settings are kept for all jobs printed with this quick set.
Job editor
When editing the job in the job editor, go to:
  • Configure printer → Edit printer configuration
Change the setting using the "Roll selection" drop down.
Selected settings are only kept for the specified job.

In the RIP: Caldera

  1. Double-click the print module and drag an image.
  2. Click the Printer Settings icon to open the Parameters Window.
  3. Go to the Printer tab.
  4. Select the Roll Destination in the dropdown list.

Roll # setting management

The XML files can be coded to Auto, Roll-1 and Roll-2. Whichever is coded will be the default setting and automatically selected, unless changed manually.
"Auto" will set the default to roll 1 and unlocked.
  • Auto-arrange will automatically change the job from roll 1 to roll 2, or vice versa, if optimal.
  • To lock, click the to the left of the job thumbnail.
"Roll-1" will set the default to roll 1 and locked.
  • Auto-arrange will not change the job from roll 1.
  • To unlock and allow auto-arrange, click the to the left of the job thumbnail.
"Roll-2" will set the default to roll 2 and locked.
  • Auto-arrange will not change the job from roll 2.
  • To unlock and allow auto-arrange, click the to the left of the job thumbnail.
The example below shows the settings for Auto and Roll-2.
Auto-arrange
Any job that is unlocked (either by default or manually) can be moved by the auto-arrange function to provide the optimum usage of media.
note:
Jobs must be checked!
Locked jobs will NOT be moved by auto-arrange.

Rules

One rule for one job

When a job is created, the settings applied to that job will apply to all the images in that job.
For example, if a job was created in roll 1; all images in the job will be printed in roll 1.
note:
This includes Single (with or without copies), Step and Repeat, and Nesting jobs. All images in the job will be printed in the same roll. To enable both rolls for a single job using these options, i.e. to arrange 40 copies of the same image on both rolls, load the same image with the same settings in both queues and select 20 copies in each queue.
IMPORTANT: see Tiling handicap in the section called "Handicaps".
Similarly, centering, margins, and other job settings only apply to a single job. So to center all jobs in their corresponding roll, you need to center each job individually.
The images below show three examples of queued jobs:
  1. Two images nested in queue 2 → Both printed on roll 2.
  2. Multiple copies of an image in queue 1 → All printed in queue 1.
  3. Images centered in their queue.

Consecutive jobs checked for printing

All consecutive jobs checked for printing in both queues that have the same resolution and the same print mode (same substrate is assumed) will be combined into a "group-job" that is printed as if all images were nested.
note:
If there is a job in the queue with a different resolution or print mode, the group-job will not include this different job and any jobs following it in the queue.
The images below show three examples of queued jobs:
  1. "Group-job 1" is printed 3p 6c 80%.
  2. Job 2 does not meet the same resolution and print mode settings as the group-job and so the group-job ends. Job 2 is printed at 6p 6c 100%.
  3. Job 3 (alphabet_1) has the same settings as the Group-job 1, but is after Job 2 and so is printed separately at 3p 6c 80%.
A detailed view of each group-job in the queue preview is given below.
To combine Job 3 (alphabet_1) with Group-job 1, move it up the print queue, above Job 2.
The image below shows the optimized print queue. "alphabet_1" has been selected and moved up in the queue.
  1. Group-job 1 is printed at 3p 6c 80%, including the "alphabet_1" image.
  2. Job 2 is printed alone at 6p 6c 100%.

Other behaviors

Old jobs with no settings will be considered as "Auto", and defaulted to roll 1 and unlocked.
Jobs coming from older versions of RIP (no settings) to the hot folder will be loaded in the roll 1 queue and unlocked (when "Hot folder" is activated).
When "Hot folder" and "Automatically check for print" are activated: each job will be loaded in the corresponding queue, as per the rules above.
  • Jobs will be loaded and a new "Group-job 2" is dynamically created while the previous Group-job 1 is finished.
  • Once Group-job 1 is done, the new Group-job 2 will be printed with all the jobs that entered the queue since Group-job 2 was created.
Preference defaults apply to all jobs in both queues.
For example, when the "Center" option is set, all jobs entering the queues will be centered.

Limitations

Tiling

IMPORTANT: Do not use tiling in dual-roll! Tiles of a single job will be printed in the same roll AND there is no way to add jobs in parallel with the tiles: the other roll will be left blank!
note:
The workaround is to tile in the RIP. This is being corrected for future releases.

Useful information

Some potentially useful information regarding the group-job feature is, as yet, unavailable in this current implementation. For example:
  • Current job shows an internal code to identify it, currently of no use to the operator.
  • All jobs included in a group job are shown as "Printing" simultaneously, even the ones that have been already printed.
  • Linked to this, if a group job gets cancelled, it is not possible to know at which point it stopped (for example, in a multi-copy, how many copies were printed).
  • PrintCare logs information for the group-job, not the individual jobs. Therefore, ink usage, media usage, etc., for each individual image/job cannot be estimated.
