HP Deskjet 2020, 2029 Printers - Setting Up the Printer Hardware

This document is for HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 2020hc and DeskJet Ultra Ink Advantage 2029 printers.
This document explains how to set up the physical parts of the printer. In addition to the steps in this document, the software CD includes basic video demonstrations to set the language and set up your printer hardware before installing the software. You can follow the hardware setup steps on the software installation CD or refer to this document for detailed instructions to set up the hardware.
Setting up the printer
Follow these steps in order.

The images in some of these steps might not look exactly like your printer, but the steps are the same.
Step one: Check the contents of the box
Follow these steps in order.
The contents might vary by country/region. See the packaging for a list of items shipped in the box.
Step two: Unpack the All-in-One
  1. Remove the tape and cardboard from the outside of the printer.

  2. Open the output tray, open the cartridge access door, and then remove the tape and cardboard from inside the printer.

  3. Remove the cardboard box containing components from inside the printer.

  4. Check to make sure all the items shown are present in the box.

    1. Black ink cartridge
    2. Color ink cartridge
    3. Power cord
    4. AC power adapter
  5. Close the cartridge access door.

Step three: Connect the power cord, and then turn on the All-in-One
  1. Connect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then plug it into a wall outlet.

  2. Press the Power button () to turn on the printer.

Step four: Load paper
Follow these steps to load paper into your printer.
  1. Raise the input tray.

  2. Lower the output tray, and then pull out the tray extender.

  3. Slide the paper width guide to its outermost position.

  4. Load a stack of U.S. letter or A4 size paper into the input tray, with the short edge first and the print side facing up. Slide the stack of paper in until it stops.

  5. Slide the paper width guide in until it rests against the edge of the paper.

Step five: Install the cartridges
Follow these steps to install ink cartridges in your printer.
Visit HP SureSupply to check ink or toner cartridge compatibility or purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies.
  1. If necessary, select your country/region.

  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to order new supplies or check cartridge compatibility with your printer.
You can also purchase genuine HP cartridges and supplies from other retailers.
  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the printer, if it is not already turned on. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before continuing.
  2. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the printer. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

  3. Remove the new cartridge from its packaging, and then pull the pink pull tab to remove the plastic tape.

  4. Hold the cartridge by its sides with the nozzles toward the printer, and then insert the cartridge into its slot. Make sure that the icon on the cartridge matches the icon on the slot.
    • The tri-color cartridge () goes in the slot on the left
    • The black cartridge () goes in the slot on the right

  5. Push the cartridge forward into its slot until it snaps into place.

  6. Repeat these steps to install the other cartridge, if necessary.
  7. Close the cartridge access door.

Step seven: Align the cartridges
Follow these steps to align the cartridges in your printer.
