This document applies to HP Slimline s5-1000 400-000 and series desktop computers.

The edges of metal panels can cut skin. Be careful not to slide skin along any interior metal edge of the computer.
caution:
This product contains components that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). To reduce the chance of ESD damage, work over a noncarpeted floor, use a static dissipative work surface (such as a conductive foam pad), and wear an ESD wrist strap connected to a grounded surface.

For best quality on dial-up connections, wait until the video has fully loaded before viewing.

Make sure the computer is disconnected from power before starting.
Step 1
Remove the side panel.

Remove the front bezel.
For more information about removing the front bezel, refer to the HP support document Removing and Replacing the Front Bezel.

Step 3
Swing the optical drive cage up part of the way.

Step 4
Detach the three connectors from the rear of the optical drive.

Step 5
Remove the screw that secures the optical drive in its cage.
Save the screw for optical drive replacement.

Swing the optical drive cage down.

Push the drive forward and pull it out the front of the computer.

Find the small hole on the side of the drive.

Find the hole marked “1” on the optical drive bay.

Step 3
Slide the drive back until the holes align.

Step 4
Swing the optical drive cage up part of the way.

Replace the screw into the hole marked “1” on the optical drive bay.

Replace the three connectors at the rear of the optical drive.

Swing the optical drive cage down.

Replace the front bezel.
