Replacing a CD or DVD Drive for HP Slimline s5-1000 and 400-000 Desktop PCs

This document applies to HP Slimline s5-1000 400-000 and series desktop computers.

Before you begin

Turn off the computer, and then disconnect all cables. Disconnect the Ethernet or modem cable before disconnecting the power cord.
Move the computer to a clear, flat, stable work surface over a noncarpeted floor.
HP strongly recommends the use of an antistatic wrist strap and a conductive foam pad when working on the computer.
Do not remove a component from its protective packaging until you are ready to install it.

warning:

The edges of metal panels can cut skin. Be careful not to slide skin along any interior metal edge of the computer.

caution:

This product contains components that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). To reduce the chance of ESD damage, work over a noncarpeted floor, use a static dissipative work surface (such as a conductive foam pad), and wear an ESD wrist strap connected to a grounded surface.

Removing a CD or DVD drive

Use the steps in this section to remove a CD or DVD drive.

warning:

Make sure the computer is disconnected from power before starting.

Step 1 Remove the side panel. For more information about removing the side panel, refer to the HP support document Removing and Replacing the Side Panel.
Step 2 Remove the front bezel. For more information about removing the front bezel, refer to the HP support document Removing and Replacing the Front Bezel.
Step 3 Swing the optical drive cage up part of the way.
Step 4 Detach the three connectors from the rear of the optical drive.
note: Press the latches on the power cable to remove it.
Step 5 Remove the screw that secures the optical drive in its cage. Save the screw for optical drive replacement.
Step 6 Swing the optical drive cage down.
Step 7 Push the drive forward and pull it out the front of the computer.

Replacing the CD or DVD drive

Use the steps in this section to replace the CD or DVD drive.

Step 1 Find the small hole on the side of the drive.
Step 2 Find the hole marked “1” on the optical drive bay.
Step 3 Slide the drive back until the holes align.
Step 4 Swing the optical drive cage up part of the way.
Step 5 Replace the screw into the hole marked “1” on the optical drive bay.
Step 6 Replace the three connectors at the rear of the optical drive.
Step 7 Swing the optical drive cage down.
Step 8 Replace the front bezel. For more information about replacing the front bezel, refer to the HP support document Removing and Replacing the Front Bezel.
Step 9 Replace the side panel. For more information about replacing the side panel, refer to the HP support document Removing and Replacing the Side Panel.
