HP Compaq nc4010 Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Hard Disk Drive

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the hard disk drive for the HP Compaq nc4010 Notebook PC.
Minimum skill level
The End User requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.
Tools required
  • Small, Phillips-head (P0 and P1) screwdriver

The replacement part number will vary depending on the hard disk drive that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

  note:

The use of the Original Spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If your unit contains a part that is labelled with the Modified Spare number, the Modified Spare must be ordered as the replacement part. If your unit contains a part that is labelled with the Original Spare number, please order the Original Spare as the replacement part. In this case either the Original Spare or the Modified Spare may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

Hard disk drive removal
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2. Remove the 3 mm P1 Phillips-head screw that secures the hard disk drive.
  3. Lift the plastic locking mechanism above the base enclosure.
  4. Pull the hard disk drive out of the bay by the locking mechanism and remove.
  5. If present, remove the hard disk drive PIN extender. Click here for instructions on removing the hard disk drive PIN extender.

  6. Place the hard disk drive in a static dissipative bag.
Hard disk drive replacement
  1. Remove the hard disk drive from the static dissipative bag.
  2. If required, replace the hard disk drive PIN extender. Click here for instructions on replacing the hard disk drive PIN extender.
      note:
    This procedure not shown in video.
  3. Lift the plastic locking mechanism on the hard disk drive.
  4. Slide the hard disk drive into the bay and push it in until the connector is seated.
  5. Press down on the locking mechanism until it is flush with the base enclosure.
  6. Replace the 3 mm P1 Phillips-head screw.
