HP Officejet 6000 (E609a) and 6000 Wireless (E609n) Printers - Setting Up a New Printer

Introduction

This document describes how to set up the product hardware and install the software. It does not include information on how to use the product.

Setting up a new Printer

Follow these steps to set up the product hardware and install the software.
  caution:
Do not connect the USB cable until these steps prompt you to do so.

Step one: Unpack the Printer

Follow these steps to unpack the product.
  1. Remove all tape and packing materials from outside and inside the product. Be sure to lift the top cover, and then remove the cardboard insert from the carriage.

Step two: Install the two-sided printing accessory

Follow these steps to install the two-sided printing accessory (duplexer) to the rear of the product.
note:
The optional duplexer only ships with some models. If you do not have the optional duplexer, skip to the next step.
  1. Find the duplexer in the box, and then remove it from its packing material. Remove any tape from the duplexer.

  2. Turn the product to access its rear side.
  3. Hold the duplexer by its sides with the rollers toward the product, and then insert it into the slot on the rear of the product.
    note:
    Look for the engraved arrow on the duplexer for help positioning it.

  4. Push the duplexer into the product until it snaps into place.

Step three: Connect the power

Follow these steps to connect the product to a power source.
  caution:
Do not connect the USB cable at this stage.
  1. Turn the product to access its rear side.
  2. Connect the power supply to the rear of the product.
  3. Connect the power cord to the power supply.
  4. Plug the other end of the power cord into an electrical outlet.

  5. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

Step four: Load paper

Use the following steps to load plain white paper in the product.
  1. Lift the output tray.

  2. Slide the paper-width guide to its outermost position.
  3. Load the paper print-side down along the right edge of the tray. Make sure the stack of paper aligns with the right and back edges of the tray.
    note:
    Make sure stack of paper does not exceed the line marking in the tray.
  4. Slide the paper-width guide snugly against the paper, and then lower the output tray.

  5. Pull out the extension on the output tray.

Step five: Install the printhead

Follow these steps to install the printhead.

  1. Open the top cover.

  2. Lift the gray latch on the printhead assembly.

  3. Remove the printhead from its packaging.

      caution:
    Do not touch the copper-colored contacts. Do not let the contacts touch any surface and be careful not to scratch the contacts while inserting the ink cartridges.

  4. Hold the printhead upright, with the color-coded icons facing up.

  5. Lower the printhead into the product so that the purple and green blocks on the printhead align with the purple and green blocks on the product.

  6. Slowly lower the gray latch.

Step six: Install the cartridges

Follow these steps to install the cartridges.

  1. On one of the cartridges, pull the orange pull-tab straight back to remove the plastic wrap.

  2. Twist the orange cap counterclockwise to snap it off the cartridge.

  3. With the cartridge contacts facing the printhead, slide the cartridge into the correct slot. The color-coded icons on the cartridge and in the printhead indicate the correct slot.

  4. Press down on the cartridge until it clicks firmly into place.

  5. Repeat these steps to load each cartridge.

  6. Close the top cover. The carriage moves to the right side of the product.

  7. Wait for the product to align the cartridges and print an alignment page. This process takes about 10 minutes.

    note:
    Mechanical noises during alignment are normal.

Step seven: Install the software

Use one of the following methods to install the HP software. The software installer prompts you to connect your USB cable. Do not connect the USB cable before the prompt.

Method one: Install the software from the product CD

Follow these steps to install the software using the product CD.
  caution:
Do not connect the USB cable until prompted to do so during software installation. HP recommends using a USB cable that is less than 3 m (10 feet) long.
note:
If you get any firewall messages during installation, click unblock or accept, or the installation fails.
  1. Insert the software CD into the CD drive of the computer. The software installer starts automatically.
    note:
    If the User Account Control screen opens, click Allow to continue.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the software.

Method two: Download and install the software from the Web

  1. If you have not already done so, type your product number in the designated text box, and then click Next.
  2. If necessary, click your product model number from the list of matching products.
  3. Click your operating system. A list of available software and driver downloads displays.
  4. In the Driver section, click the Full Feature software and Drivers option.
    note:
    If you prefer a basic install, click the basic version instead of the full feature version.
  5. Thoroughly review the download options and information, and then click Install now or Download only, depending on your download preferences.
    note:
    Click the View directions () link for step-by-step instructions on downloading and installing the software.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
