HP Compaq dc7900 Convertible Minitower PC - Removing and Replacing the CPU Fan

Introduction

This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the CPU Fan for the HP Compaq dc7900 Convertible Minitower PC.

Minimum skill level

The End-User should possess product-specific knowledge and technical skill on how to service the system, and have familiarity with the operating system.

CPU Fan removal

  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2. Remove the access panel and heat sink. Click here for instructions to remove the Access Panel
  3. Disconnect the CPU fan cable from the system board.
  4. Press the release tab at the top of the CPU fan holder and slide it up to disengage it from the CPU fan bracket.
  5. Remove the CPU fan holder and CPU fan.
  6. Flex the four retention tabs on the CPU fan holder to disengage the CPU fan from the fan holder.
  7. Lift the CPU fan off of the fan holder.

CPU Fan replacement

  1. Position the CPU fan in the correct orientation over the guide pins on the fan holder.
    note:
    The CPU fan must be installed in the correct orientation for proper air cooling. Make sure the air flow arrow located on one side of the CPU fan is pointing in the same direction as the arrow on the CPU fan holder release tab.
  2. Press the CPU fan into the fan holder until it snaps into place.
  3. Align the fan holder with the slots on the CPU fan bracket.
  4. Press the release tab and slide the fan holder down until the release tab aligns with the slot in the CPU fan bracket and then release the tab.
  5. Connect the CPU fan cable to the system board.
