HP Scanjet G4010 and G4050 Photo Scanners - Front Panel Scan Button Settings

Introduction

This document describes the custom settings of the front panel Scan button that can be saved as defaults for the HP G4010 and G4050 Photo Scanners using the HP Solution Center with HP Photosmart Premier software.
These settings become the default for scans with the HP Solution Center scanning software when launched by pressing the front panel Scan button.

Scan Button Settings

To open the Scan button screen, click Settings in the HP Solution Center window, and click Front Panel Scan Button Settings under Scan Settings. This will display the Scan button tab in the Front Panel Scan Button Settings window.
These settings will affect all scans made using the front panel Scan button () to scan through HP Solution Center software.
Any changes made to these settings once saved become the default settings for using the front panel Scan button.

The Scan button on the front panel has the following settings:

What are you scanning?

Document

Color: When selected, sets the colorspace to millions of colors.
Grayscale: When selected, sets the colorspace to 256 shades of gray.
Black & White: When selected, sets the colorspace to 1-bit black and white.

Picture

Scan originals from glass: This setting is used when scanning photo prints from the scanner glass.
Scan negatives using the Transparent Materials Adapter (TMA): This setting is used when scanning negative film with the TMA.
Scan positives, including 35 mm slides, using the TMA: This setting is used when scanning slide film with the TMA.

Where do you want to send the scanned image(s)?

File Type:

This setting specifies the default file type for scans created using the front panel Scan button with the HP Solution Center. The list of available file types varies depending on the selected Scan to: destination.
note:
The name that appears on this button will change to match the selection in the Scan to: field, or it will be grayed and unavailable. File Type is selectable for E-mail Save Options…, HP Photosmart Premier Save Options…, HP Document Viewer Save Options…, and Save to file Save Options….
The File Type: drop-down list will either be grayed and unavailable, or include a subset of all file types. Select a file type from the drop-down list.
  • Bitmap Image (*.bmp)
  • JPEG Image (*.jpg)
  • Tiff Image (*.tif)
  • Tiff Image (compressed) (*.tif)
  • PNG Image (*.png)
  • PCX Image (*.pcx)
  • FlashPix (*.fpx)
Additional file types are available when scanning documents.
  • PDF (*.pdf)
  • PDF (searchable) (*.pdf)
  • Rich Text File (*.rtf)
  • HTML (*.htm)
  • TEXT File (*.txt)

HP Photosmart Premier Save Options…

From the Scan button tab, click HP Photosmart Premier Save Options….

File Type

This setting specifies the default file type for scans created using the front panel Scan button with the HP Solution Center.

JPEG Options…

Click the JPEG Options… button when File Type is set as JPEG Image (*.jpg).
Select the Image Quality for the JPEG scans. Choose whether to use a Progressive JPEG format.

Base File Name

This setting is where the default base file name is specified for scans initiated from the front panel Scan button.

Overwrite existing files with the same filename

Check this box to have all scans that are initiated from the front panel Scan button saved as the base filename without an appended number sequence. If not checked, the base file name will be used, but appended with a four digit number beginning with 0001. If a filename with 0001 exists at the save location, the number is incremented to the next available number.

Save Location

This is the default save location for scans that are initiated from the front panel Scan button with the HP Solution Center. Use the Browse… button to change this location.

Use Monthly Sub-Folder

If checked, a sub folder for the month (i.e. 2007-04 (Apr)) will be created in the parent folder specified in the Save Location section. Scans will be saved to this subfolder.

Prompt for these Save Options at time of scan

If checked, the prompt screen HP Photosmart Premier Save Options for the Scan button will pop up at the time of the scan. The title bar may display E-mail Save Options for the Scan button, HP Document Viewer Save Options for the Scan button, or Save to file Save Options for the Scan button, to match the Scan to destination.
If you select the Prompt for these Save Options at time of scan check box in the save options, pressing the front panel Scan button () will display the following window.

Show Preview when scanning from the Scan button

If checked, the scan preview will appear for each scan. The scan preview allows you to make changes to settings during the scan process including auto correct photos, resize, lighten/darken, sharpen, color adjustment, resolution, and special effects. The preview will also allow you to manually select a scan region.
The following screen was displayed during the scanning process using Scanjet G4050. HP Scanning preview of Scan button with Picture was selected for originals. Wallet-sized photo prints were laid flat on the scanner glass.

Prompt for these settings at the time of the scan

If checked, the prompt screen Scanning from the Scan button (Front Panel) will pop up at the time of the scan.
Pressing the front panel Scan button () will display the following window if the Prompt for these settings at the time of the scan check box is selected.

Scan Picture Settings…

From the Scan button tab, click the Scan Picture Settings… button.

Resolution (ppi):

This will set the default output resolution for all scans initiated by pressing the front panel Scan button. The factory default setting is 200 ppi. There are 13 settings ranging from 75 ppi to 19200 ppi (75, 100, 150, 200, 300, 600, 1200, 2400, 3600, 4800, 7200, 9600, 19200).

Output Type:

This will set the default output type for all scans initiated by pressing the front panel Scan button. The factory default setting is Millions of Colors. There are seven settings available.
  • Automatically Choose Output Type
  • Millions of Colors
  • 256 Colors
  • 256 Colors Web Palette
  • 256 Colors System Palette
  • 256 Gray Shades (Grayscale)
  • Black & White (1-bit)

When scanning picture from the glass…

Choose to scan single or multiple images and whether they will be scanned as one or multiple files.
  • scan single picture to file.
  • scan multiple photos to individual files. (single selection for each photo found)
  • scan multiple photos to a single file. (single selection for all photos found)
  • scan entire scanning glass.

Apply Scan Profile

Check this box and select a profile name to set a previously created profile as the default settings for the front panel Scan button. Refer to other documentation for details about using scan profiles.

View Scan Profile

Click this button to display the settings associated with the selected scan profile.
