HP Notebook PCs - Removing Unused, Unwanted, or Demo Programs

This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs with Windows Vista.

Improving computer performance by removing programs to increase drive space

There is a limited amount of space on a hard drive, thus keeping unnecessary copies of obsolete and unwanted programs can cause performance problems. Things that waste space include programs that were shipped with the PC as well as programs you have downloaded. Also, some programs may have been downloaded in the background while you were downloading or installing other programs. Periodically, you should review the programs that are installed on your PC and remove programs that you do not use to prevent clutter. Be aware that if you use freeware and shareware, removing an undesired program may affect other programs that you do want to use.
Software companies offer demonstration copies of programs that expire after a few days. Your HP PC shipped with several third party trial programs, such as Microsoft Office and Norton Internet Security that you can try at no cost. If you decide to buy the full copy of any such program, remove the demonstration copy entirely before installing the full version to avoid conflicts. Back up your data files and set a Windows restore point with Windows System Restore before removing any software. See Related links for more information.

Remove software

Follow the steps below to uninstall software that you do not use, and do not intend to use.
  1. Click Start > Control Panel > Uninstall a program to open the Programs and Features window.
  2. Find and select the program that you wish to remove in the listing, and then select Uninstall from the menu bar.
  3. If prompted, allow the uninstall action to continue.
Some programs will open an uninstall window of their own. Follow the prompts to remove the application completely.
  4. When the unwanted program is uninstalling, perform one of the following actions:
    • Select the next program you wish to remove.
    • Close the Control Panel and restart the PC before removing any other unwanted programs.
If you remove a program that was originally installed by HP and then decide you want the program restored, use the HP Recovery Manager to re-install the original program.
