HP Designjet 500 and 800 series - Mac OS: HP Designjet Firmware Update Utility Cannot Locate Printer Over USB Connection
Issue:
HP Designjet Firmware Update Utility cannot locate the Designjet over an ethernet nor USB connection after installing Apple Security Update 2006-004 or 2006-005 on a Macintosh running Mac OS X version 10.4.7.
Solution
Close the Printer Setup Utility. Relaunch the DesignJet Firmware Update Utility. The printer should now be available for upgrade.
The Security Update 2006-004 and for Mac OS 10.4.7 from Apple makes a change to the print queues which causes the DesignJet Firmware Update Utility to fail.To correct this you must first quit out of the HP Designjet Firmware Update Utility. Then reset the printing System by opening the Printer Setup Utility and selecting "Reset Printing System..." from the Printer Setup Utility menu.

note:When Reset Printing System is selected all existing print queues will be deleted. The customer will need to re-add each printer that previously had a queue. Installed print drivers are not affected.
Now, select Add in the Print Queue window and create a new queue for the DesignJet 500/800.
