HP Photosmart A516 Printer - Printed Colors Are Not the Colors Expected

Issue
The colors in the printouts are not the expected colors. The printout might look as if only one color printed, or as if a color did not print, or as if the wrong colors printed.
Solution
  note:
The product only supports HP 110 tri-color inkjet print cartridge.
Step one: Print a diagnostic page
  1. Make sure that there is unused, plain, white paper loaded in the input tray.
  2. Remove any memory cards from the memory card slots.
      caution:
Do not pull out a memory card while the memory card light is flashing.
  3. Use the arrow buttons () to select the Printer menu, and then press the OK button.
  4. Select Tools and press the OK button.
  5. Select Print Test Page and press the OK button. The diagnostic page prints.

Step two: Check ink levels
  note:
If a refilled or remanufactured print cartridge or a print cartridge that has been used in another product is installed, the ink level indicator will be inaccurate or unavailable.
The ink-level indicators can be found on the bottom half of the diagnostic page. The bars with E, indicating Empty, and F, indicating Full, on either end show the ink levels in the print cartridge. As ink is used, the solid color changes to a faded color.

If the print quality is unacceptable and the print cartridge is low on ink, replace the print cartridge.
Follow these steps to replace the print cartridge.
  1. Make sure that the product is on.
  2. Open the print cartridge door.

Do not touch the copper electrical contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

  7. Push the print cartridge into the carriage until the print cartridge snaps into place.
  8. Close the print cartridge door.
Step three: Check for defects on the diagnostic page
In general, if the product and print cartridge are working properly, the patterns (which look like grids of lines) should contain few or no missing lines. None of the colors should be missing and there should be no streaks of ink on the page.
Missing lines or streaked bars
If a pattern shows more than a few missing lines, the print cartridge is not functioning properly.

Colors do not match the color on the cartridge label
If the color of one or more of the patterns is very different from the color dots on the print cartridge label, the print cartridge is not functioning properly.

Missing colors
If any of the patterns are entirely missing, the print cartridge is not functioning properly.

Ink smears
If the diagnostic page shows smeared ink, clean the print cartridge.

Use any one of these methods to clean the print cartridge.
Method one: Automatically clean the print cartridge
  5. Select Clean cartridge and press the OK button.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions. Press the OK button to begin cleaning the print cartridge.
  7. When the product finishes cleaning the print cartridge and prints a diagnostic page, check the diagnostic page.
    • If the diagnostic page has white streaks or missing colors, the print cartridge needs to be cleaned again. Select Yes, and then press the OK button.
    • If the print quality of the diagnostic page looks good, select No, and then press the OK button.
Method two: Manually clean the print cartridge contacts
  1. The following items are required to clean the print cartridge and carriage contacts.
    • Clean, distilled water. Use bottled or filtered water if distilled water is not available. Tap water might contain contaminants that could damage the print cartridge.
    • Clean cotton swabs or any soft, lint-free material that will not stick to the print cartridge (coffee filters work well).
    • Sheets of paper or paper towel to rest the print cartridge on during cleaning.
  2. Open the print cartridge door and wait until the carriage stops moving.
  3. Remove the print cartridge and place it on a piece of paper with the nozzle plate facing up.
      note:
Clean the contacts quickly. The print cartridge should not be outside the product for more than 30 minutes. The ink can dry and clog the nozzles if the print cartridge is outside the product for too long.
  4. Unplug the product.
  5. Dip a cotton swab in the clean, distilled water and squeeze it to remove most of the moisture. The cotton swab should be only slightly damp.
  6. Clean the copper electrical contacts of the print cartridge.
      caution:
    Do not touch the nozzles.

  7. Let the print cartridge sit for 8 to 10 minutes to allow the cleaned area to dry, or use a new swab to dry it.
  8. Reinstall the print cartridge and plug in the product.
  9. Close the print cartridge door.
If the diagnostic page shows smeared ink, click here (c00681603) (in English) to continue troubleshooting.
Step four: Continued troubleshooting if the diagnostic page shows no defects
If there are no defects on the diagnostic page, the print cartridge and product are working correctly. Click here (c00685644) (in English) to continue troubleshooting.
