HP LaserJet Tank MFP 1005, 1600, 2600 printers - Er/03 or 'Out of Paper' error, printer does not pick paper

After sending a print job, the Attention light and Paper icon blink, an Er/03 displays on the printer control panel. An Out of Paper error message might also display on the computer or HP Smart app.

Perform the following tasks in the order given. Use the printer after each task to see if the issue is resolved.

Check the paper, and then reload it

Check the paper stack for defects, such as wrinkled, torn, or bent pieces that might cause a pick issue.

  1. Remove any paper from the input tray.

  2. Remove any bent, wrinkled, or torn paper in the stack.

  3. Check for and remove any obstructions inside the paper tray. Make sure nothing blocks the paper.

  4. Load the stack of paper into the paper tray.

Print a cleaning page

Use Toner Cleaning Mode to clean dust from the paper rollers.

  1. Make sure paper is loaded in the main tray, and then turn on the printer.

  2. Open Advanced settings, Printer Home Page, or HP Device Toolbox.

    • HP Smart app (Windows, Mac, iOS, Android): Open the app, and then click your printer name or image. Select Printer Settings if necessary, and then select Advanced settings.

    • HP Printer Assistant (Windows 7): Search for and open HP, and then open HP Printer Assistant. Select Print, and then click Printer Home Page (EWS) or HP Device Toolbox.

  3. Click System > Service.

  4. If prompted, enter the Username and Password.

    Note:

    If the password has not been changed, you can find the Username and PIN (password) underneath the toner access door.

  5. Locate Fuser Cleaning Mode, click Start, and then click OK.

  6. On the control panel, press the Resume/Cancel button .

    The printer uses a single piece of paper to clean the fuser.

  7. Discard the paper in the output bin.

Clean the pickup rollers

Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the pickup roller and cause paper feed issues. Clean the pickup rollers inside the printer.

Gather the following items:

  • A lint-free cloth or swab

  • Distilled, filtered, or bottled water (tap water might damage the printer)

  1. Turn off the printer, and then unplug the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  2. Remove the stack of paper from the input tray.

  3. Tilt the printer onto its side.

  4. Release and hold on to the blue latch, and then remove the access panel.

  5. Lightly dampen the swab or cloth with the water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the swab.

  6. Clean the pickup rollers using the swab, applying a moderate amount of pressure.

  7. Allow the pickup rollers to dry completely (approximately 10 minutes).

  8. Hold onto the blue latch, align, and insert the access panel. Release the blue latch to lock the panel in the place.

  9. Tilt the printer back to its original, upright position.

  10. Reload the stack of paper into the input tray.

  11. Plug the power cord back into the printer, and then turn on the printer.

Reset the printer

Reset the printer to recover from printer errors or failures.

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.

  2. Unplug the power cord from the power source.

  3. Wait 60 seconds.

  4. Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.

    Note:

    HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

  5. Turn on the printer to complete the reset.

Service the printer

Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.

Go to Contact HP Customer Support to schedule a product repair or replacement. If you are in Asia Pacific, you will be directed to a local service center in your area.
