HP PageWide 377, 477, 552, 577 - "The selected file or folder cannot be opened" message displays on the control panel when printing photos from a USB thumb drive

Issue

When printing photos from a USB thumb drive using the Plug and Print feature, the following message displays on the printer control panel:
"The selected file or folder cannot be opened."

Cause

On HP PageWide 500 Series and HP PageWide 300, 400, and 500 Multifunction Series Printers, when files are saved as TIFF file types to a USB thumb drive using the Scan to USB functionality, the files are created using a compression format. This compression format is not recognized by these printers when trying to print from a USB thumb drive using the Plug and Print feature.

Solution/Workaround

Use one of the following workarounds to resolve this issue:
  • Save the file as a PDF or JPEG: When using the Scan to USB function, save the file as a PDF or JPEG.
PDF or JPEG files can be printed using the Print from USB (Plug and Print) functionality.
  • Print TIFF files from a PC: If TIFF files are required, create and save the TIFF file using the Scan to USB functionality. Then take the USB thumb drive to a computer that is connected to the printer and print from the computer.
