HP DeskJet GT 5820 Printer - Wireless Printer Setup (OS X)

This document is for HP DeskJet GT 5820 and 5822 All-in-One printers and Mac computers using OS X v10.11 El Capitan, v10.10 Yosemite, or v10.9 Mavericks.
Set up your HP printer on a wireless (Wi-Fi) network. These steps apply to first time connections, new router or ISP setup, or to restore a lost connection due to network-related issues.
Step 1: Review requirements
To use your printer on a wireless network, you need the following items.
  • An active 802.11-compliant Wi-Fi network, such as a home wireless network
  • A Mac OS X computer connected to the same network, either through Wi-Fi or an Ethernet cable
Step 2: Set up and turn on the printer
The printer must be turned on with ink tanks filled, printheads installed, and paper loaded before setting up the wireless connection. Go to Setting Up the Printer Hardware for detailed set up steps. Skip this step if your printer hardware has already been set up.
Step 3: Restore default wireless settings on the printer
Press a series of buttons on the printer to reset the wireless settings to ensure that the connection completes successfully.
  1. Make sure the printer is turned on.
  2. If the wireless light is blinking, skip to the next step to continue installing the software.
  3. Press the Wireless button and the Cancel button at the same time, and then hold them for 3 seconds.
  4. The wireless light next to the wireless button should blink. Repeat these steps if the wireless light does not blink.
  5. Immediately continue to the next step to install the software. You have approximately 120 minutes to complete the software setup using the HP auto wireless connect feature.
Step 4: Install the software
To finish the printer setup, install the software, and then connect the printer to your wireless network.
On the computer you want to print from, start the HP Easy Start app. The app guides you through the printer setup and installation process.
  note:
If you already connected the printer with a USB cable, go to the What if my printer is already connected via USB and I want to switch to a wireless connection? FAQ for instructions to convert the printer to a wireless connection.
  1. Go to 123.hp.com and type the printer model (for example, Deskjet 3635), click Begin, and then click Download.

  2. After the software downloads, open HP Easy Start.
  3. Select Setup My Printer.
  4. On the Terms and Conditions window, click Accept.
  5. On the Prepare window, click Continue.

  6. On the printer control panel, make sure the power button light is fully lit and the wireless light is blinking. If the power button light is dim (indicating power save mode), press it once until it becomes bright.
  7. The Connect window lists your printer series and serial number as [Ready to connect]. If the printer is not displayed, repeat the steps to restore the default wireless settings.
  8. On the Connect window select the printer, and then click Continue.

  9. After the installation checks your network configuration, the Connect window shows your printer and your wireless network SSID with a Join button between them. If the name and network are correct, click the Join button.

After clicking Join, the computer is temporarily disconnected from the wireless network while the connection is set up.
      note:
On the Connect window, you can choose to name the printer, such as Home Office Printer. You can also choose to attach the printer to a different wireless network.

  10. HP Easy Start requests access to the selected wireless network keychain on the Mac. This request is to allow the application to retrieve the password for the wireless network and use it to connect the printer.
    • Click Allow to proceed.
    • If you click Deny, HP Easy Start cannot locate the wireless network password, and prompts you to enter the password manually.

  11. Once the wireless network password is accepted, HP Easy Start sets up the printer and connects it to the network. When this is complete, the Join button is replaced by a check mark. Click Continue.

  12. The Install window gives various options for software to be installed for the printer.
    • HP Essential Software is necessary to ensure the best results for printing.
    • HP Easy Scan must be installed to access scanning features.
Select the items you want to install, and then click Continue.
      note:
Scroll down to see all of the software options, including the HP Easy Scan and the HP Uninstaller.

  13. To print from OS X, you must create a print queue. On the Enable Printing window, click Add Printer.
