HP ENVY, OfficeJet 7640, 5740, 8040 Printers - First Time Printer Setup

This document is for HP ENVY 7640, 7643, 7644, 7645, Officejet 5740, 5741, 5742, 5743, 5744, 5745, 5746, Officejet 8040 with Neat, and Officejet 8045 e-All-in-One printers.
Complete the steps in this document to set up the printer hardware before you install the printer software on the computer.

The following video demonstrates how to unpack and set up the printer for the first time.
Step 1: Remove the printer from the box
Remove the printer from the box, and then remove all tape, stickers, and packing materials from inside the printer.
The contents might vary by country/region. See the packaging for a list of items shipped in the box.
  1. After you remove the printer from the box, remove all tape and packing materials from the outside of the printer, including any decals on the printer control panel.

  2. Open the scanner lid, remove all tape and packing materials from the scanner glass, and then close the scanner lid.

  3. Open the ink cartridge access lid, remove all tape and packing materials from inside the printer, and then close the lid.

  4. Pull open the input tray, remove the output tray, and then remove all tape and packing materials from the photo tray.

  5. With the paper tray pulled out, push in the photo tray.

  6. Slide out the paper width guides, and then remove all tape and packing materials from inside the input tray.

  7. Replace the output tray on the paper tray, and then push in the input tray until it locks into place.
  8. Make sure to remove all hardware and materials from the box before discarding or recycling the box and packing materials.
Step 2: Connect the power cord and set preferences
Plug the printer into a power source, turn on the printer, and then set the language, time, and country/region on the printer control panel.
  1. Connect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then plug the other end of the power cord into an electrical outlet.

  2. Turn on the printer.
  3. On the printer control panel, touch your language, and then touch Continue.
  4. Touch your country/region, and then touch Continue Setup.
  5. Set the month, day, and year, and then touch Continue.
  6. Set the time, and then touch Continue to complete the preferences setup.
Step 3: Load paper into the main input tray
Load plain white paper in the main input tray after you unpack the printer from the box. To view animations on the control panel on how to load paper, touch the play icon when prompted.
  1. Pull the input tray toward you to open it.

  2. Push in the photo tray as far as possible.

  3. Slide out the paper width guides in the input tray as far as possible.

  4. Push the stack of paper into the input tray until the paper stops, and then gently slide in the paper width guides until they lightly rest against the edges of the paper.

  5. Push in the input tray until it locks into place. If the tray is not locked into place, paper jams can occur.
  6. When the Have You Changed the Paper? screen displays, you can change the tray, paper size, and paper type settings if different from the paper you previously loaded, or touch OK to keep the previous paper settings.
Step 4: Install the ink cartridges
Install the ink cartridges that shipped in the box with your printer. To view a demonstration on the control panel on how to install the ink cartridges, touch Change Ink when prompted.
  1. Open the cartridge access door by placing two fingers under one or both of the small handles on the sides of the cartridge access door and then lifting it up. The Door Open screen displays on the printer control panel with the message 'The cover or door must be closed to print. Check that it is completely closed.'

  2. A Change Ink option might display in the bottom right corner of the touchscreen. If desired, touch Change Ink to watch an animation for installing new cartridges (optional).
  3. Remove one of the cartridges from its package. Be careful to only touch the black plastic on the cartridge.

  4. Pull the orange tab to remove the protective tape.
      caution:
    Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Do not replace the protective tape on the contacts. Handling these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

  5. Slide the new cartridge at a slight upward angle into the empty slot, and then gently push up on the cartridge until it snaps into place.
    • Insert the tri-color cartridge into the left slot.
    • Insert the black cartridge into the right slot.

  6. Repeat these steps to install the other cartridge.
  7. Close the cartridge access door. When the door is completely closed, the Door Open screen with the message 'The cover or door must be closed to print. Check that it is completely closed.' disappears, and the printer returns to the Home screen.

  8. Touch OK.
  9. Wait for the printer to calibrate and align the cartridges. After the alignment is complete, the printer prints an alignment page.
  10. If the alignment page does not print, follow these steps to complete the alignment:
    1. Make sure that you have loaded plain white paper into the paper tray.
    2. On the printer control panel, touch Setup ().
    3. Touch Printer Maintenance, and then touch Align Printer.
    4. Follow the instructions on the control panel to complete the alignment process. After the alignment is complete, the printer prints an alignment page.
  11. Touch OK, and then discard or recycle the alignment page.
Step 5: Install the printer software
Your HP printer hardware is set up and you can now install the printing software. Do not connect the printer to a computer until instructed to do so in the printing software.
