HP Z620 Workstation - Removing and Replacing Front Panel I/O Assembly

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the front panel I/O assembly for the HP Z620 Workstation.
Minimum skill level
The End-User must possess extensive product-specific knowledge and technical skill on how to service the system, and be familiar with the operating system.

The replacement part number will vary depending on the front panel I/O assembly that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

  note:
For customers in countries/regions with RoHS legislation (e.g. EU, China, etc.) restricting the use of hazardous substances in electrical equipment. The use of the "Original" spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Modified" spare number, the "Modified" spare part must be ordered as the replacement part. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Original" spare number, please order the "Original" spare number as the replacement part. In this case, either the "Original" or the "Modified" spare number may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

This video was developed using a pre-production version of the workstation. The chassis and parts shown might not exactly match the current production version, but the part removal and replacement steps are the same.
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to the product or loss of data.
  2. Remove any PCI cards blocking access to the connectors.
  3. Remove the cable ties that secure the front panel I/O cables to the chassis taking note of the cable routing and the position of the cable-tie locking heads for reinstallation.
  4. Disconnect the front audio, 1394, and front USB cables from the system board.
  5. Remove the Torx-15 screw that secures the front panel I/O assembly to the front of the chassis.
  6. Slide the assembly toward the bottom of the computer and pull it away from the chassis.
  7. Carefully guide the assembly cables out of the opening on the front of the chassis, and remove the assembly.
Front panel I/O assembly replacement
  1. Thread the front panel I/O assembly cables through the opening in the front of the chassis.
  2. Position the assembly in the opening and slide it toward the top of the computer.
  3. Replace the Torx-15 screw that secures the assembly to the front of the chassis.
  4. Connect the USB, 1394, and front audio cables to the system board.
  5. Replace the cable ties that secure the front panel I/O cables to the chassis.
  6. Replace any PCI cards if removed.
  7.   note:
    Ensure that the cable-tie locking heads are positioned to one side of the cable bundle so that they do not interfere with PCI card guide and PCI card replacement.
