HP ProBook 6460b Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Hard Disk Drive

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the hard disk drive for the HP ProBook 6460b Notebook PC.
Minimum skill level
The End user requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.
Tools required
  • Small, Phillips-head (P0 and P1) screwdrivers

Part numbers are subject to change.
The replacement part number will vary depending on the hard disk drive that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

Hard disk drive removal
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
      note:
    The following video depicts a specific configuration of the notebook. The same removal and replacement procedures apply to all configurations of the notebook.
  2. Loosen the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the hard disk drive to the base enclosure.
  3. Use the black mylar tab located on the hard disk drive enclosure to slide the hard disk drive away from the hard disk drive connector on the system board.
  4. Lift the hard disk drive out of the hard disk drive bay.
  5. Place the hard disk drive in a static dissipative bag.
Hard disk drive replacement
  1. Remove the hard disk drive from the static dissipative bag.
  2. Place the hard disk drive into the hard disk drive bay and align it with the hard disk drive connector on the system board.
  3. Use the black mylar tab located on the hard disk drive enclosure to slide the hard disk drive securely into the hard disk drive connector.
  4. Tighten the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the hard disk drive to the base enclosure.
