HP Designjet 100 and 120 Printer Series - Printhead Alignment

Introduction

The printer aligns the printheads in the following circumstances:
  • before the first use of the printer
  • each time a printhead is replaced
  • each time the printer is turned on and the printhead tests fail
  • when the alignment process is manually started
    note:
If the alignment test fails the first time, the printer will try two more times.

Manually starting a printhead alignment

To manually start a printhead alignment, use one of the following methods:

Aligning the printheads in HP Designjet System Maintenance

  1. Start the printer driver for your HP Designjet 100 color personal printer. The procedure to start the printer driver depends on the operating system of the computer.
    • Windows 2000 and Windows XP: On the computer, click the Start button in the Windows task-bar. Select Settings and then Printers. Right-click the icon that refers to your HP Designjet 100 color personal printer and select Printing Preferences.
    • Windows NT 4.0: On your computer, select the Print option of any regular software application for Windows, such as Microsoft® Word, Microsoft Excel or Microsoft WordPad (the Print option is usually located in the File menu). The Print dialog will appear on your screen. Make sure that your HP Designjet 100 color personal printer is selected in the Name field in the Print dialog box. Click Properties.
    • Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows ME: On your computer, click the Start button in the Windows task-bar. Select Settings and then Printers. Right-click the icon that refers to your HP Designjet 100 color personal printer and select Properties.
  2. Click the Advanced tab on the driver.
  3. Click the Maintenance button. The computer starts an Internet browser and starts the HP Designjet System Maintenance tool.
  4. Click Align Printheads on the left-side menu bar.

Aligning the printheads using the printer’s front panel buttons

While holding down the Power button, press the OK button three times, and then release both buttons. A printhead alignment will begin.

Reading the alignment pattern sheet

During the printhead alignment process, a test sheet prints. Each printhead (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) prints four squares. The sensors scan the test sheet, and test for the following conditions:
  • Bidirectional positioning
  • Paper-axis deviation (PAD)
After the four squares print, each printhead prints a pattern, alternating color printheads and the black printhead. At the end of the line, it tests the printhead-to-printhead alignment. The result of the alignment test appears at the bottom-right corner of the page.
  • V (test passed)
  • X (test failed)
  • C (test cancelled)
The test result appears in black so that even if a color printhead is not working correctly, a result can be seen.
note:
If the printer fails to print the four-color squares, the second part of the test will not begin.
