HP DeskJet 1600C Printer - PCL Driver v 4.1, Remote Control Panel Settings, DJ225EN.EXE

  note:
The Control Panel for DOS can be downloaded at the following web site:
http://www.hp.com/cposupport/indexes1/dj1600cs.html
Description
The DOS Printer Control Panel (PCP) allows you to establish settings for your printer that you cannot access through your software program. For example, you can turn Energy Star on and off, you can establish A4 to be your default paper size, or you can turn Page Protection on and off.
Be aware that any settings you CAN make on your software program will override any setting you make using the PCP. Even if you don’t make a change in your software program, its default setting will override the PCP.
The PCP works only if you are directly connected to the printer through a bidirectional Centronics cable. It does not work over a network or if you are sharing your printer with a switch box.
The PCP takes advantage of the new bidirectional capabilities of your HP DeskJet 1600C printer and your PC. This means that your printer can send information about itself back to the PC using the bidirectional Centronics cable. Most newer PCs support bidirectionality, but may need to have it turned on in their "setup" program.
Installation
During the installation of the HP DeskJet 1600C v 4.1 printer driver, the DOS Printer Control Panel is also installed. When installed, the files are placed in the \WINDOWS directory. If you choose not to install the PCP with the 4.1 driver and you need to install it separately, the files will be placed in the \HPDESKJT directory.
The way to start up this utility: DJ1600CP
The way to install it from DOS: A:\install

Tray Lock
Paper Tray
Lower Tray (default)
Allows you to lock a tray so that paper will only be selected from it if it is specifically selected. Use when you keep letterhead, transparencies, etc. loaded in one tray and do not want them used when the other tray runs out of paper.
Paper Size
Letter (default)
Legal
A4
Select the default paper size for the printer.
  note:
There is not a selection for envelopes in the PCP, because when an envelope is loaded into the manual feed slot it automatically becomes the default.
Paper Type
Plain (default)
Premium
Glossy
Transparency
Select the default paper type for the printer.
Page Setup Options
Orientation
Portrait (default)
Landscape
Select whether you want the print orientation to be portrait (vertical) or landscape (horizontal).
Lines/Page
Set the vertical spacing for the default paper size in terms of lines per page. Sixty (60) is the common.
Setting for A-size paper. Settings are from 5 - 128; the default is 60.
Copies
Set the number of copies you want to print, from 1 - 999; the default is 1.
Print Quality Options
Print Mode
Presentation
Select PRESENTATION for the best printing quality for graphics. Presentation does not enhance the printing of text. It will, however, slow the printing speed somewhat.
Normal (default)
Select NORMAL for most of your printing, especially text-only documents.
EconoFast
Select ECONOFAST for the fastest printing speed, which also uses less ink. EconoFast is great for fast printing of spreadsheets.
Color Mode
Color (default)
Select COLOR for color printing.
Print in Grayscale
Select BLACK & WHITE/GRAYSCALE to print a document in black & white and shades of gray. This setting enhances black && white graphics. It also will print a color document in shades of gray, thus providing you a high-quality master for non-color photocopying.
Font Options
Symbol Set
These options apply only to PCL.
A SYMBOL SET is a collection of letters, numbers, and symbols. If you want to print a symbol such as umlaut o ("), you must first select the symbol set that contains that character. Roman-8 is the default symbol set.
You should also be aware that the same character on your display may not be the one that prints.
Pitch
PITCH applies only to fixed-space typefaces and is mostly used for screen printing. Use 10 if your default paper size is Letter or Legal. Use 12 if your default paper size is A4.
Language Options
PCL (default)
PostScript (TM)
Optional Language
Select the DEFAULT LANGUAGE the printer expects to receive. PCL is the native language of the printer. POSTSCRIPT is an available option.
If another language becomes available, the instructions for that language SIMM will instruct you to select Optional Language.
Context Switch
On (default)
Off
Allows the printer to automatically determine which printer language it is receiving. This allows you to send files in a different language without having to change the default. For example, if your default language is PostScript and you send a PCL file to the printer, it will automatically switch to PCL, print your file, then switch back to the default PostScript language.
Other Settings Options
Centronics Type
Fast (default)
Standard
FAST Centronics is available on most newer computers. If your computer "hangs" or gives you a "port not recognized" message, switch to STANDARD.
Energy Star
On (default)
Off
Reduces the energy consumption of your printer after 30 minutes of idle time. It will take slightly longer to print the first page of your next document if Energy Star is active (the printer must warm up).
Printer Port
LPT1 (default)
LPT2
LPT3
Select the PRINTER PORT (Centronics) that your printer is connected to.
Page Protect
On
Off (default)
Enhances memory use of the printer. It will slow your printing speed somewhat. Set Page Protect on, if
you are printing multiple copies of a document and are getting "not enough memory" errors.
Printer Timeout
Most applicable in network or shared printer situations. It determines the amount of time the printer will wait before looking for data from another source. The settings range from 1 - 3600; the default is 15.
