Abbildung : Defect, with the direction the paper moved through the product indicated

Solution

Follow these steps to improve the print quality.

Step one: Make sure you are using genuine HP cartridges

HP recommends that you use genuine HP ink cartridges. Genuine HP ink cartridges are designed and tested with HP printers to help you easily produce great results, time after time.
Hinweis:
HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP supplies. Product service or repairs required as a result of using a non-HP supply will not be covered under warranty.

Step two: Check ink levels and replace low or empty cartridges

Check the ink levels of the ink cartridges to see if the poor print quality is caused by low ink in one or more cartridges.
Hinweis:
Ink level warnings and indicators provide estimates for planning purposes only. When an indicator shows low ink levels, consider having a replacement ink cartridge available to avoid possible printing delays. You do not need to replace ink cartridges until print quality becomes unacceptable.

Check the ink levels

  1. Make sure that the product is on and connected to the computer.
  2. Double-click the HP Digital Imaging Monitor icon () on the Windows taskbar. The HP Solution Center dialog box opens.
  3. From the HP Solution Center, click the Settings menu.
  4. Select Print Settings and click Printer Toolbox. The Printer Toolbox opens.
  5. Click the Estimated Ink Levels tab to see the ink levels for the ink cartridges.

Replace the low or empty ink cartridges using the following steps.

Replace low or empty ink cartridges

  1. Press the power button () to turn on the product.
  2. Open the ink cartridge door by lifting it until it snaps into place.

    • If replacing the black ink cartridge, push the tab of the ink cartridge on the far right.
    • If replacing one of the other ink cartridges, such as photo black, magenta, cyan, or yellow, push the tab on the appropriate ink cartridge to remove it.
  4. Remove the new ink cartridge from its packaging by pulling the orange pull-tab straight back to remove the plastic wrap from the ink cartridge.

  5. Twist the orange cap to snap it off.
    Hinweis:
A forceful twist may be required to remove the orange cap.
Abbildung : Removing the orange cap
  6. Using the colored shaped icons for help, slide the ink cartridge into the empty slot until it clicks into place and is seated firmly in the slot.
Abbildung : Inserting the new ink cartridge
      Vorsicht:
Do not lift the latch handle on the carriage to install the ink cartridges. Doing so can result in incorrectly seated ink cartridges and printing issues. The latch must remain down in order to correctly install the ink cartridges.
Make sure to insert the ink cartridge into the slot that has the same shaped icon and color as the one that is being installed.
    Hinweis:
Repeat steps three through seven for each ink cartridge to be replaced.
  7. Close the ink cartridge access door.

Step three: Select a higher print-quality setting

  1. On the File menu in the software program being printed from, click Print.
  2. Click the button that opens the Properties dialog box.
    Hinweis:
Depending on the software program, this button might be called Properties, Options, Printer Setup, Printer, or Preferences.
  3. Click the Features tab.
  4. In the Print Quality menu, select a high print quality setting, such as Best, Maximum dpi.
  5. Click OK.

Step four: Print and evaluate an extended self-test diagnostic page

  1. Turn on the product.
  2. Load letter or A4 unused plain, white paper into the main input tray.
  3. Press and hold the cancel button (), and then press the red-eye removal button ().
  4. The product prints an extended self-test diagnostic page.

Look at the color blocks on page 2 of the Extended Self Test page
  • If all of the color blocks are present, not streaked, and have a uniform color, then the printer is functioning properly. The problem may have been corrected just by printing the extended self-test page. However, if the printing problem still occurs, it is being caused by something other than the printer. Check the software settings, the image file, and the media. Do not clean the printhead or replace ink cartridges if all the color blocks are present and solidly printed.
  • If any of the blocks are streaked, missing, or are not uniformly colored, there is a problem with that cartridge or the printhead. Follow the step below to check that the cartridges are latched and vented, and to clean the printhead.

Step five: Make sure the cartridges are latched

  1. Make sure that the product is turned on.
  2. Lift the cartridge door to open it.
Abbildung : Opening the cartridge door
The carriage moves to the center of the product.
  3. Make sure that the cartridges are installed in the correct slots.
Abbildung : Checking the cartridge slots
Match the shape of the icon and color of the cartridge with the slot with the same shape of icon and color of cartridge.
  4. Run a finger along the top of the cartridges to find any cartridges that are not snapped down completely.
  5. Press down on any cartridges that are sticking up. The cartridges snap down into place.
  6. Close the cartridge door.

Step six: Make sure the cartridges are vented

If the blocks on the extended self-test page are streaked or missing, the cartridges may not be properly vented.
  1. Remove the ink cartridges and examine the vent area (above the HP logo on the top of the cartridge).
    Abbildung : Vent area
    • If any of the cartridges still have the orange tabs attached, remove the tab.
      Abbildung : Orange tab
    • If any of the cartridges have vents that are clogged, try cleaning the vents with a pin.

      Abbildung : Clogged vent
  2. Reinstall the ink cartridges

Step seven: Align the printer

If the steps above have not helped, try aligning the printer.
  1. Make sure that there is plain paper loaded in the input tray.
  2. Double-click the HP Digital Imaging Monitor icon () on the task bar. The HP Solution Center appears.
  3. In HP Solution Center, click Settings.
  4. Select Print Settings and click Printer Toolbox. The Printer Toolbox appears.
  5. Click the Device Services tab.
  6. Click Align the Printer.
The product prints a test page, aligns the printheads, and calibrates the product. Recycle or discard the page.

Step eight: Run the automatic utility to clean the printheads

Try printing another extended self-test page. If one or more color blocks is still streaked or missing, try running the automatic utility to clean the printhead.
  1. Make sure that the tray contains plain paper.
  2. Double-click the HP Digital Imaging Monitor icon () on the Windows task bar. The HP Solution Center opens.
  3. In HP Solution Center, click Settings.
  4. In the Print Settings area, click Printer Toolbox. The Printer Toolbox opens.
  5. Click the Device Services tab.
  6. Click Clean the printhead.
  7. Follow the on-screen prompts, and then click Done.

Step nine: Replace the ink cartridge

If the print quality is still poor, the ink cartridges may be faulty. Follow the steps below to replace the ink cartridge associated with the streaked or missing color block on the extended self-test page.
  1. Press the power button () to turn on the product.
  2. Open the ink cartridge door by lifting it until it snaps into place.

Step ten: Contact HP

If the print quality is still poor after replacing the ink cartridge, try running the automatic utility to clean the printheads again. If that does not help, contact HP. The printhead may need to be replaced.
