HP Business Notebook PCs - HP Battery Health Manager

HP Battery Health Manager is a BIOS-level setting available in most HP business notebooks. It is designed to help optimize battery life by mitigating the exposure of the notebook battery to key factors, such as high state-of-charge, that can accelerate battery swelling and chemical aging over time.

Learn more about mitigating battery swelling with HP Battery Health Manager (in English).

To learn more about the benefits of lithium-ion batteries, how they chemically age, and the factors that can accelerate battery swelling, go to HP Notebook PCs - Lithium-Ion Batteries.

To learn more about battery swelling and what to do if your battery is showing signs of swelling, go to HP Notebook PCs - Swelling or deformation of notebook battery.

Install HP Battery Health Manager

HP Battery Health Manager is available on all HP business notebooks since 2016.

If HP Battery Health Manager is not available in your computer BIOS (F10 > Advanced > Power Management Options), update the BIOS to the minimum requirement for your device. To identify the minimum BIOS version that contains HP Battery Health Manager, go to HP Introduces HP Battery Health Manager.

Select the optimal setting

HP recommends that customers enable HP Battery Health Manager to either Let HP Manage My Battery Charging or Maximize My Battery Health based on usage or the age of the computer.

Let HP Manage My Battery Charging setting

The Let HP Manage My Battery Charging setting dynamically changes how the system charges the battery based upon usage conditions and temperature over time.

Use this setting in the following situations:

  • Mixed-use environments where the notebook is regularly removed from AC power and the battery is allowed to discharge.

  • Prefer a single process for your organization.

  • The notebook is less than a year old.

Maximize My Battery Health setting

The Maximize My Battery Health setting limits the maximum state-of-charge on the notebook battery to 80%, which has been proven to optimize battery health and helps mitigate battery swelling due to high state-of-charge.

Use this setting in the following situations:

  • Environments where the notebooks are continually connected to AC power and seldom removed and allowed to discharge (including remote office environments).

  • The notebooks are one-year old or older (older systems may have been exposed to accelerating factors such as high state-of-charge over time).

BIOS update to change the default setting to Maximize My Battery Health

BIOS update 01.17.01 changes the default setting in HP Battery Health Manager to the Maximize My Battery Health setting on select older HP business notebooks.

Maximize My Battery Health is the recommended setting for HP business notebooks that are as follows:

  • More than a year old.

  • Did not have HP Battery Health Manager set to Let HP Manage My Battery Health from the start of its deployment.

  • Continually plugged into AC power for long periods of time (for example, remote workers).

Why change to the Maximize My Battery Health setting?

As usage patterns for business notebooks have changed over time, HP has worked to identify the best approach to optimize battery health on older systems that might be impacted by these changes.

The Maximize My Battery Health setting is a simple and effective solution to help mitigate those factors that can accelerate battery degradation and chemical aging over time. BIOS update 01.17.01 automatically enables this setting on select HP business notebooks so that you do not have to enable it manually.

What to expect from changing the default setting to Maximize My Battery Health

Changing the default setting to Maximize My Battery Health causes the following:

  • This setting results in a reduced run time between charges, because it limits the charging capacity of the notebook’s battery to 80% of the currently available full charge capacity.

  • You will continue to see the battery charge at 100% in the Windows icon tray, with 100% representing the new, adjusted full charge capacity.

  • The change to Maximize My Battery Health has no impact on the system performance.

Note:

Before this update, Maximize My Battery Health caused the Windows icon tray to display a maximum charge of 80%. After the update, the Windows icon tray displays a maximum charge of 100%. This change was made to create a more user-friendly and consistent customer experience.

Note:

After this update, if you are running the Windows 11 operating system, a small heart icon is displayed in the Windows icon tray. This heart icon indicates that a battery health feature has been enabled.

Change HP Battery Health Manager settings

Customers with HP Battery Health Manager in their BIOS can update their HP Battery Health Manager settings manually or by using Microsoft or HP Client Manageability Tools. It is important that customers proactively enable the recommended settings in the HP Battery Health Manager based upon the usage and the age of the notebooks in their install base.

Access HP Battery Health Manager settings in the BIOS

The HP Battery Health Manager settings are located in the BIOS.

Note:

You can access BIOS by pressing f10 during startup

The order and description of the settings might change depending on the model and the BIOS version you have on your system.

  1. Turn off the computer, and then connect the AC adapter if it is not already connected.

  2. Turn on the computer, and then repeatedly press the f10 key to open the BIOS Setup Utility.

  3. Using the arrow keys, select Advanced > Power Management Options.

  4. To review the setting options, click Battery Health Manager, and then select the appropriate settings.

Change settings automatically using a manageability tool or dashboard

Organizations can manage and set HP Battery Health Manager across their installed base using a wide range of manageability tools. HP has developed a whitepaper that provides detailed information and sample scripts on how to change HP Battery Health Manager settings using popular manageability tools and dashboards.

Mitigate battery swelling in a remote workforce

Companies are quickly moving to restructure their organizations to allow knowledge workers and other key employees to work remotely. An estimated 33% of remote workers leave their work notebook constantly plugged into AC power, which can keep the battery in a consistent high state-of-charge. With the number of remote workers increasing, HP recommends companies use the HP Battery Health Manager to improve battery health and performance in an always-plugged-in environment.
