HP Compaq 8710p Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Real-Time Clock Battery

Introduction

This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the Real-Time Clock Battery for the HP Compaq 8710p Notebook PC.

Minimum skill level

The End-User must possess extensive product-specific knowledge and technical skill on how to service the system, and be familiar with the operating system.

Tools required

  • Phillips P1 screwdrivers
  • Flat-bladed screwdriver

The replacement part number will vary depending on the Real-Time Clock Battery that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

Real-Time Clock Battery removal

  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      Attention :
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2. Loosen the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the expansion memory/wireless LAN Minicard cover to the bottom of the notebook.
  3. Use your finger or a flat-bladed tool to lift the edge of the expansion memory/wireless LAN Minicard cover and remove it.
  4. Disconnect the RTC battery cable from the system board.
  5. Use a small, flat-bladed tool to pry the RTC battery out of the socket on the base enclosure.

Real-Time Clock Battery replacement

  1. Remove the paper backing from the RTC battery.
  2. Insert and press the RTC battery into the socket on the base enclosure.
  3. Reconnect the RTC battery cable to the system board.
  4. Toe the expansion memory/wireless LAN Minicard cover into the enclosure.
  5. Tighten the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws.
