HP DeskJet 5645, ENVY 5640, 5660 Printers - Loading Paper, Envelopes, Cards, and Photo Paper

This document is for HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 5645 All-in-One, ENVY 5640, 5643, 5644, 5646, 5660, 5661, 5663, 5664, and 5665 e-All-in-One printers.

You can print on plain or specialty paper. Load paper, legal size paper, envelopes, and index cards in the printer's main input tray. Load photo paper in the photo tray. Make sure to place the printer on a hard, flat surface before you use it. Using the printer on an uneven or unsteady surface might cause the pages to print skewed, or might cause paper size adjustment issues.

Attention :
Do not load any media while the printer is printing. Jams or paper feed issues might occur.

Load letter, A4, or legal size paper

Follow these steps to load paper in the input tray.

Grasp the handle on the input tray, and then pull the tray toward you to open it. The Close Tray screen displays on the printer control panel with the message, 'A paper tray is open. Close the tray to continue. Touch to view paper loading instructions.'

Touch the Play icon () on the bottom left corner of the touchscreen to watch a video on loading paper (optional).
With the input tray pulled out, push in the photo tray as far as possible.

Remove any paper from the input tray that is different than the type of paper you want to load, and then slide out the paper width guides as far as possible.

Remarque :
If you want to load legal size paper, lower the front of the input tray. Locate the latch that is inside the front of the tray on the left. Slide the latch upward, and then lower the front of the tray.

Insert a small stack of paper into the tray. Make sure that the print side is face-down with the short edge forward.

Push the paper toward the rear of the input tray until the paper stops, and then, if necessary, gently slide the paper width guides inward so that they lightly rest against the edges of the paper.

Remarque :
Make sure that the stack of paper is not higher than the top edges of the paper width guides.
Push the input tray into the printer until it locks into place.

The Have You Changed the Paper? screen displays. If you do not touch an option, the message fades after several seconds, and the printer uses the last paper settings that were entered. Follow these steps to adjust the paper settings as needed.
- If you did not change the paper size or type, touch OK to return to the Home screen, or wait several seconds to allow the printer to automatically return to the Home screen.
- If you did change the paper size or type, touch Main Tray, touch Paper Size, and then touch your paper size. Touch Paper Type, and then touch your paper type. Touch Done, and then touch OK to return to the Home screen.

Load envelopes

Follow these steps to load envelopes in the input tray.

Grasp the handle on the input tray, and then pull the tray toward you to open it. The Close Tray screen displays on the printer control panel with the message, 'A paper tray is open. Close the tray to continue. Touch to view paper loading instructions.'

Insert the envelopes into the center of the input tray with the envelope flap on the left and facing up. If the flap is on the short end of the envelope, insert the envelope into the center of the tray with the flap away from the printer and facing up.

Push the envelopes toward the rear of the input tray until the envelopes stop, and then gently slide the paper width guides inward so that they lightly rest against the edges of the envelopes. Make sure that the envelopes are centered in the tray.

Push the input tray into the printer until it locks into place.

Insert a small stack of index cards into the center of the input tray. Make sure that the print side is face-down with the short edge forward.
Push the index cards toward the rear of the input tray until the cards stop, and then gently slide the paper width guides inward so that they lightly rest against the edges of the cards. Make sure that the cards are centered in the tray.

Push the input tray into the printer until it locks into place.

Load photo paper

Follow these steps to load 10 x 15 cm (4 x 6 in) photo paper in the photo tray.

Grasp the handle on the input tray, and then pull the tray toward you to open it. The Close Tray screen displays on the printer control panel with the message, 'A paper tray is open. Close the tray to continue. Touch to view paper loading instructions.'

Put one or two fingers in the slot on the photo tray, and then pull the tray toward you to open it as far as possible.

Remarque :
If you do not see the photo tray inside the input tray, remove the output tray, and then pull open the photo tray.

Remove any paper from the photo tray that is different than the photo paper you want to load.
Insert the photo paper print-side down into the photo tray. For photo paper with a perforated tab, place the paper in the tray print-side down with the perforated tab closest to you.

Remarque :
Make sure that the stack of photo paper is not higher than the top edges of the paper width guides.
Push the photo tray into the printer as far as possible.

Replace the output tray on the input tray, if you removed it, and then push the input tray into the printer until it locks into place.

On the Have You Changed the Paper? screen that displays, check to make sure that the photo paper is correctly loaded into the photo tray.
- If 4x6 in., Photo Paper displays in the Photo Tray field, the photo paper is loaded correctly in the photo tray. Touch OK to return to the Home screen, or wait several seconds to allow the printer to automatically return to the Home screen.
- If the Photo Tray field displays as Empty, open the photo tray and make sure that the photo paper is pushed all the way to the rear of the tray, and then push the photo tray into the printer as far as possible. Push the input tray into the printer until it locks into place, and then check the touchscreen to make sure that 4x6 in., Photo Paper displays in the Photo Tray field.
