HP DesignJet T120 Printer and T520 Printer Series - Firmware Upgrade Required

HP has identified a firmware issue that may cause some HP DesignJet T120 and T520 printers to reject ink cartridges. To prevent this failure, a firmware upgrade is required.
There are three options to upgrade the firmware:

Option 1 - Automatic Firmware Upgrade (Internet connection required)

From the printer’s front panel
  1. On the printer’s front panel, tap , then Settings > Product update.
  2. Tap Check for Update Now to check whether new firmware is available.
    • To enable the printer to automatically download and install firmware updates, turn on the Auto Update from the Product Update screen.
  3. If a new firmware version is available, you are given the opportunity to download and install it.
From the Embedded Web Server
  1. On a printer with an Internet connection, tap or on the printer’s front panel to check its IP address.
  2. Access the printer’s Embedded Web Server by typing the printer’s IP address into your web browser.
  3. In the Embedded Web Server, select the Web Services tab and then Product Update.
  4. Click Check Now to check whether new firmware is available.
    • To enable the printer to automatically download and install firmware updates, turn on the Auto Update feature from the Product Update page and click Apply.
  5. If a new firmware version is available, you are given the opportunity to download and install it.

Option 2 - Firmware Upgrade Tool (USB connection required)

  1. On a Windows XP, 7, 8, or 10 PC with a USB connection to the printer, download a zip file with your firmware.
  2. Open the zip file and run the HP DesignJet T120/T520 Firmware Upgrade Tool. Included in the zip file, you will find a walkthrough guide of the upgrade procedure.
  3. Follow the steps in the upgrade tool.
  4. Wait until a success message is displayed in the tool to confirm that you have successfully upgraded your firmware.

Option 3 - HP DesignJet Utility (using the firmware file downloaded from hp.com)

Check the product number on the label located at the back of the printer.
  1. Check the Product Number on the label located at the back of the printer.
    1. Units with a product number that has an A as the last digit (Example:CQ890A, CQ891A, CQ893A) are Rev A printers.
    2. Units with product number that have a B, C, D, or E as the last digit (Example: CQ890B, CQ891B, CQ893B,CQ890C, CQ891C, CQ893C...) are Rev B/C printers.
  2. Download the firmware file found under the Firmware tab on the printer support page. Two firmware files are available, one for Rev A printers and one for Rev B printers.
  3. Launch the HP DesignJet Utility and select your printer.
  4. Select the Admin tab.
  5. Click the Select File… button to browse to the firmware file that you just downloaded.
  6. Click the Upload File button and follow the instructions.
