HP Printers - HP Printer Assistant Opens the 'Printer Setup & Software' Window

This document is for HP printers that come with HP Printer Assistant software and computers with Windows operating systems.
HP Printer Assistant is a Windows software program for HP printers. It comes with many printers manufactured after 2009. With it, you can perform many printer related tasks such as scanning, ordering supplies, checking ink levels, and more.
After you upgrade to a new version of Windows, the Printer Setup & Software window opens instead of the settings and tools view when you open HP Printer Assistant, and the printer icon is missing from the Devices and Printers folder. The issue might occur even though your printer was set up and installed before the Windows upgrade.

Set up the printer connection again to resolve the issue. In some cases, reinstalling the HP driver and software is required.
Step 1: Reconnect the printer
Try connecting the printer again to regain access to Printer Assistant tools.
  1. Click Connect a new printer.
When prompted, select the connection type, then follow the on-screen instructions to set up the printer.
      note:
If a red X displays and the connection fails, click Retry, then continue to the next step.
  2. Press the power button on the printer to turn it off.
  3. Close all running programs on your computer, then restart your computer.
  4. Turn on the printer.
  5. Open HP Printer Assistant.
    • If you can open Printer Assistant, the issue is resolved.
    • If you cannot open Printer Assistant or the red X displays and the connection still fails, continue to the next step.
Step 2: Uninstall any HP printer software
Uninstall the HP print driver and software before reinstalling the latest driver.
  1. If your printer connects to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer.
  2. Search Windows for programs and features, then click Programs and Features in the list of results.
  3. In the list of installed programs, click your HP printer name, then click Uninstall or Yes.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software removal.
  5. Restart the computer.
Step 3: Reinstall the latest driver from the HP website
After uninstalling the software, download and install the latest version of the full feature software.
  note:
As an alternative method to downloading the software, you can use the installation CD if it includes the driver for your version of Windows.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. If your printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer.
  3. If prompted, select a method to identify your printer model, and then follow the on-screen instructions to go to the download page.
  4. Click Download next to the full feature driver (recommended), or click Basic Drivers for other driver options.
Step 4: Restart the computer and the printer
Restart the computer and the printer after reinstalling the driver to finish setting up the software in Windows.
  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Close all running programs on your computer, then restart your computer.
  3. Turn on the printer.
  4. Open HP Printer Assistant.
    • If you can open Printer Assistant, the issue is resolved.
    • If you cannot open Printer Assistant, and the Printer Setup & Software screen displays, connect the printer again, then restart the printer and computer to complete the installation.
Step 5: Try the Windows built-in print driver
If the previous troubleshooting steps did not resolve the issue, use the Windows built-in driver. For more information, go to Installing and Using the Built-in Windows Print Driver.
Refer to the table for information about completing printer tasks using the Windows built-in print driver.
Task
Steps
Opening HP Printer Assistant or HP Solution Center printer management software
These HP applications do not install with the built-in driver. However, workarounds are available to complete printer management tasks.
Printing from a Start app
Click the menu icon , and then click Print.
  note:
Since it is up to the app developer to include printing, not all apps have a print option.
Printing from a Desktop app
Open the document or photo that you want to print, click File, and then click Print to select your printer and change any settings.
Scanning
Scanning from the printer scan button or icon is not supported with the Windows built-in driver. Use one of the following methods to scan from the computer instead:
Scan with USB-connected printers:
  • Windows Scan app (Windows 10 only): Supports scanning from most HP all-in-one printers. Go to Windows Scan at the Microsoft Store (in English) to install.
  • HP Scan & Capture app (Windows 8, 8.1, and 10): Scan photos or documents using your printer or the camera on your computer.
Go to Using the HP Scan and Capture App for more information.
  • Windows Fax and Scan: Search Windows for fax, click Windows Fax and Scan in the list of results, and then click New Scan.
  • Paint: Search Windows for paint, click the Paint app in the list of results, click File, and then click From scanner or camera.
Scan with network-connected printers:
  1. Get the printer IP address from the printer control panel network settings menu or by printing a network configuration page.
  2. Type the IP address in the address line of a web browser such as Internet Explorer, and then press Enter to open the printer Embedded Web Server (EWS).

  3. On the Scan tab, click the Webscan application.
  4. Select the Image type, and then click Scan.
  5. Right-click the scan in the browser window, click Save Picture as, and then click Save.
Faxing
Fax using the buttons and menus on the printer control panel.
Checking estimated ink levels
View the ink level indicators on the control panel, if available. Or, print a self-test page or printer status report from the printer control panel.
Changing print settings
  1. Search Windows for devices, and then click Devices and Printers in the list of results.
  2. Right-click the icon for your printer, and then click Printing Preferences.
  3. Change any print settings, and then click OK.
