HP EliteBook 8540p Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Display Assembly

Tools required

Small Torx T8 screwdriver

Small, Phillips-head (P00 and P1) screwdrivers

Small, flat-bladed screwdriver or a flat-bladed alignment tool

Remove the battery. Click here for instructions on how to remove the battery.

Remove the switch cover. Click here for instructions on how to remove the switch cover.

Remove the Wireless LAN module. Click here for instructions on how to remove the Wireless LAN module.

On the bottom of the notebook, remove the two 6 mm T8 Torx screws from the rear corners of the notebook that secure the display assembly to the base enclosure.
note:
Under warranty, the display assembly is replaced as a whole unit. For out of warranty purposes, the individual internal components can be replaced to reduce customer repair costs. -
Remove the 4 mm P1 Phillips-head screw in the battery bay that secures the display assembly to the base enclosure.

On the rear of the notebook, remove the two rubber screw covers from the corners of the notebook.

Remove the two 6 mm T8 Torx screws from the corners of the notebook that secure the display assembly to the base enclosure.

Turn the notebook right side up and open the display panel fully.

Disconnect the display panel cable from its connector on the system board and remove the display panel cable from its routing channel on the top cover.
-
Disconnect the microphone cable from its connector on the audio pass-through cable and remove the microphone cable from the routing channel on the top cover.
-
Remove the wireless WAN antenna cables from the opening in the base enclosure.
-
Remove the wireless WAN and wireless LAN antenna cables from their routing channel on the top cover.
-
Remove the 4 mm P1 Phillips-head screw from the left hinge that secures the display assembly to the base enclosure.

Remove the two 6 mm T8 Torx screws from the left display hinge that secure the display assembly to the base enclosure.

Remove the 6 mm T8 Torx screw from the right display hinge that secures the display assembly to the base enclosure.
note:
Be sure to support the display assembly while removing this screw. -
Lift the display assembly off of the alignment pins on the top cover and remove it.
Display assembly replacement

Align and place the display hinges onto the alignment pins on the top cover.

Replace the 6 mm T8 Torx screw into the right display hinge that secures the display assembly to the base enclosure.
note:
Be sure to support the display assembly while replacing this screw. -
Replace the two 6 mm T8 Torx screws into the left display hinge that secure the display assembly to the base enclosure.

Replace the 4 mm P1 Phillips-head screw from the left hinge that secures the display assembly to the base enclosure.
-
Route the wireless WAN and wireless LAN antenna cables through their routing channel on the top cover.
-
Route the microphone cable through the routing channel on the top cover and connect the microphone cable into its connector on the audio pass-through cable.
-
Thread the wireless WAN antenna cables through the opening in the base enclosure.
-
Route the display panel cable through its routing channel on the top cover and connect the display panel cable into its connector on the system board.
-
Close the display panel and turn the notebook over.

On the rear of the notebook, replace the two 6 mm T8 Torx screws into the corners of the notebook that secure the display assembly to the base enclosure.

Replace the two rubber screw covers into the corners of the notebook.
-
On the bottom of the notebook, replace the two 6 mm T8 Torx screws into the rear corners of the notebook that secure the display assembly to the base enclosure.
-
Replace the 4 mm P1 Phillips-head screw in the battery bay that secures the display assembly to the base enclosure.
