HP iPAQ Voice Messenger and HP iPAQ Data Messenger - Troubleshooting when the Unit Fails to Charge

Symptom
The HP iPAQ Voice Messenger and HP iPAQ Data Messenger devices may fail to charge due to faulty battery, sync/power cable, AC adapter, or a defective unit. It is important to isolate the issue to identify which component is defective.
Solution
Perform the following troubleshooting steps when the unit fails to charge.
Step 1: Using the charging cable
Follow these steps:
  1. Plug one end of the charging cable to the device and the other to the AC adapter.
  2. Connect the AC adapter to an electrical outlet with adequate power supply.

If the LED indicator on the device displays a light, continue to step 2 else go to step 4.
Step 2: Charging icon on device screen
If the upper-right corner of the device screen displays a charging icon then go to step 3 else go to step 4.
Step 3: Checking the charging status in the device

Monitor the progress indicator showing the charge. If the indicator displays any progress this implies that the unit is charging. Let the unit charge for four to six hours. If the indicator fails to display any progress then go to step 4.
Step 4: Using the in-box USB synchronization cable
Plug one end of the in-box USB cable to your computer and the other end to your device and perform a sync operation. If the synchronization starts then this determines the USB cable is not faulty go to step 5. If the synchronization does not start then go to step 6.
Step 5: Using a separate Charger
Use a separate charger such as a car charger to charge the unit. If the unit charges then the AC adapter may be defective. Contact HP Support Center to have it replaced.
Step 6: Using a separate cable
Use a separate cable to charge the unit. If the unit charges then the in-box cable may be defective. Contact HP Support Center to have it replaced. If the above steps fail to resolve the issue, then the device may be defective. Contact HP Support Center to send the device for repair.
