HP EliteBook 8730w Mobile Workstation - Removing and Replacing Real-Time Clock Battery

Introduction

This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the Real-Time Clock Battery for the HP EliteBook 8730w Mobile Workstation.

Minimum skill level

The End User requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.

Tools required

  • Small, Phillips-head (P1) screwdrivers
  • Small, flat-bladed screwdriver or a flat-bladed alignment tool

The replacement part number will vary depending on the Real-Time Clock Battery that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP.

Real-Time Clock Battery removal

  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2. Loosen the four captive P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.
  3. Turn the notebook right side up and open the display panel fully.
  4. Use a flat-bladed tool or your finger to lift the top edge of the keyboard and then place it upside down on the top cover.
  5. Pull the metal positive contact back to release the RTC battery from the socket on the system board.

Real-Time Clock Battery replacement

  1. With the positive (+) side facing up, insert and press the RTC battery into the socket on the system board.
  2. Toe the tabs on the bottom edge of the keyboard into the top cover and press the keyboard flat.
  3. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  4. Tighten the four captive P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.
