HP Designjet 50ps Printer - Sentinel Service Errors During the Software Installation

Introduction

During installation of the 50ps software, a 'Sentinel' service error can occur causing the software installation to terminate. The error occurs when the software setup queries the parallel port, and is unable to detect the port or the dongle that is required for a 10ps or 20ps upgrade is not detected. Follow the instructions below to resolve the issue.
note:
The dongle must be attached to the parallel port for successful installation of the software if a 10ps or 20ps printer is being upgraded to the 50ps model.

Ensure the Windows Server meets the minimum requirements

Prior to installing the 50ps Software, minimum requirements must be met. Ensure the Windows Server meets the following prerequisites:

Hardware requirements

  • Processor - 700-MHz Pentium III or higher (minimum 350-MHz Pentium II)
  • RAM - at least 512 MB (for Windows 2000) or 384MB (for Windows NT)
  • Free hard disk space - 9 GB (minimum 4GB)
  • An available parallel port (this is also required if the printer is physically connected using the Jetdirect card or the USB interface)
    note:
    If a parallel port is NOT installed and/or properly configured on the server the software installation will fail.
  • CD-ROM drive
  • Color monitor with 1024 x 768 pixel resolution

Software requirements

  • Operating system: Windows 2000 Server (recommended) with SP 2 or Windows NT 4.0 Server with at least Service Pack 6a (If the appropriate Service Packs are not yet installed, you should do this before starting with the installation)
  • Internet browser - Netscape Navigator 4.08 or MS Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher
  • HP Designjet 50ps software installed on an NTFS partition
  • TCP/IP is used as the network protocol
  • Services for Macintosh must be installed via Network, Services
    note:
    Macintosh services must be installed whether or not Macintosh computers are integrated within the network.
  • SNMP Services must also be installed under Network, Services
    note:
    The appropriate Service Packs for the server’s operating system (Windows 2000: SP 2; Windows NT 4.0: at least SP 6a) and the SNMP and Services for Macintosh network services must be installed before an installation of the HP Designjet 50ps software is possible.

Troubleshooting steps

Before continuing with the steps below, ensure the issue is related to the 'Sentinel' services. The three known Sentinel service errors that can occur are shown below:

The errors will display during the installation as shown below in Figure 4.

If the software installation issue is 'Sentinel' service related, continue with the steps below:
  1. Visually check the back of the Windows server, and ensure a parallel port is installed.
  2. After checking for a physical port, access the computer BIOS and ensure the parallel port (LPT1) is configured properly.
    note:
    Refer to your IT administrator or the motherboard user's manual for assistance. HP recommends setting the parallel port to ECP. Also ensure that the port addresses are configured properly.
  3. Once the prerequisites above are met and the parallel port is properly installed and configured, ensure the sentinel.sys file is listed in the c:\ winnt\system32\drivers folder on the server.
  4. If the sentinel.sys file is missing from the c:\winnt\system32\drivers folder, then copy the sentinel.sys file from the setup CD (MD_Setup21\Disk Images\Disk1\Drivers folder) into the c:\ winnt\system32\drivers folder.
  5. Install the 50ps software.
