HP Designjet 5500 Series Printers - Upgrading and Installing Firmware

Introduction

From time to time, Hewlett Packard provides firmware upgrades for their products. Upgrading firmware increases a printer's functionality and enhances existing features. Firmware can be downloaded from the Internet or ordered on CD-ROM (to order a CD-ROM, follow the steps for downloading the firmware and order the CD instead of downloading).

How to update an HP Designjet 5500 series printer

If this utility is running on Windows or Mac OS, follow the instructions in the section "Downloading firmware" to update the printer’s system software.

Downloading firmware

  1. Click here to download firmware for HP Designjet printers at http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=82225&swItemId=pl_59704_5&swEnv0id=2002.
  2. Select HP Designjet Firmware, and then choose the appropriate HP Designjet 5500 series model.
  3. Select the printer's current firmware version (found through the printer's front panel (Printer setup menu, Utilities, Statistics, Code Rev =).
  4. Click Submit.
  5. If the printer's firmware is current, the message Your firmware version is up-to-date will be displayed (thus, no firmware upgrade is available).
  6. If the firmware can be upgraded, select the appropriate link to download the new firmware.
  7. Once the uncompressed binary file is on your local hard disc drive, unload the media from the printer.
  8. Open the printer's WebAccess page and click the Firmware upgrade link. This can be done by typing the IP address (for example, http:\12.345.67.89) of the printer in the address window of your Internet browser and locating the link.
  9. Click the Browse button, and navigate to the location of the file for the printer on the hard disk.
  10. With the firmware file selected, click the Upgrade button. The upgrade process will take some time, during this time it is important to maintain the upgrade window as the active window. If you ask your browser to open another window, it will close the connection and cancel the download to the printer.
    note:
Do not turn the power to the printer off, or unplug the printer until the upgrade is complete.
  11. A status bar will show the percentage of the file that has been downloaded to the printer. Only when the upgrade file has been completely transferred to the printer (100%) will the printer's front panel show any signs of upgrade activity. If the message An unexpected error has occurred, check that the firmware you are using is a valid firmware file occurs during the upgrade, ignore the message provided that the printer's front panel displays the upgrading firmware message.
  12. At the end of the upgrade process the printer will reboot.
  13. Once the printer display's the Ready message, verify the upgrade has successfully completed by using the printer's front panel menus. Go to the Printer setup menu, Utilities, Statistics, Code rev= S.XX.XX.

Other operating systems

note:
If the firmware has been downloaded correctly, but problems arise while upgrading printer firmware, another download is not necessary. The files can be found in the default directory located in C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Designjet System Maintenance. Proceed to the section titled "Upgrade Process".
If the operating system is any other operating system (such as UNIX or DOS), perform the next two steps, then proceed with section titled "Upgrade Process".

  2. Open the folder when prompted, once the download is complete. Ensure the language is set to English and click OK. All necessary files will be installed.
